ERIC BODENSTAB Obituary
August 9, 1940 - April 29, 2012
It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the peaceful passing of Dr. Eric Bodenstab on Sunday, April 29th after a valiant battle with cancer. Eric was born in Pietersburg, South Africa, the eldest of three sons born to Hermann and Velia. From an early age Eric displayed exceptional leadership qualities. He was the captain of his rugby team, head boy of his high school, and president of his medical school graduating class. He attended the University of Pretoria medical school where he earned the Dean's medal for academic excellence upon graduation in 1968. In South Africa, Eric joined his father in his medical practice. During this time, he also served in the military and began his studies in Anaesthesiology. In 1976 he moved with his family to Canada where he began his practice as a General Practitioner / Anaesthesiologist for the town of Tisdale and surrounding communities. He was later joined by his two brothers, Theo and Robert in the family practice. It is here that he spent the next 30 years doing what he loved most, caring for others. He loved Obstetrics and during his career he delivered over 2500 babies. He was also proud to serve the medical community on various professional boards. He was honoured to be the recipient of many awards including the S.M.A. Quality Improvement Award in 1995 and honorary memberships in the Canadian and Saskatchewan Medical Association in 2006. During his leisure time Eric enjoyed traveling, gardening, outdoor adventure in Northern Saskatchewan, and landscaping, but mostly spending time with his family. Traveling with his family gave him the opportunity to educate his children about the world. Eric never missed an opportunity to teach and never ceased to learn something new. Everyone who came in contact with him felt his genuine warmth, kindness, and compassion. Eric was one of a kind. In 2007 he moved to Saskatoon and joined Lakeside Medical Clinic where happily continued his medical career. We have peace in our hearts knowing that Dr. Eric practiced the art of medicine until shortly before his death. He is predeceased by his parents and his younger brother, Dr.Theo Bodenstab. He is lovingly remembered and forever missed by the mother of his children and wife of 40 years, Anne, three daughters, Tanya (Tom) Waslen of Saskatoon, Michelle (Robert) Bowden of Atlanta, Janine (Frank) Fabian of Kelowna, and son, Ivan of Kelowna, grandchildren Elizabeth, Jonathan, Alexander, Maximilian, Anna, Robert, Eric, Isabel, Lucas, and William. He will be greatly missed by his special friend of 8 years Germaine Freistadt, his brother Dr. Robert (Lesley) Bodenstab, sister in law Annchen Bodenstab, Dr. Carl (Louise) Freyer and numerous nieces and nephews. Liturgy of The Word will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, 114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon, with celebrant Rev. Fr. Ken Beck. Cremation. Rite of Committal of ashes at a later date in Kelowna, BC. Thank you to the doctors and nurses of the Royal University Hospital and St. Paul's Hospital Palliative Care Unit for the wonderful care given to Eric. My family and I are extremely saddened by the shocking news of passing away of beloved Dr. Eric Bodenstab. He was our beloved family Doctor until we left for Nepal in January 2012 and returned to Saskatoon to find his letter to us stating he retired from the practice due to health reason. Only when we went to a pharmacy recently to refill the medicine he had prescribed to my my wife, then we knew of his passing away and as a result the prescription became ineffective. Dr. Eric not only provided us warm care when we were in need, but also taught our children and us about the survival strategies as immigrants. He was one of my spiritual teachers and flawless human being with fairness and positive discrimination towards the vulnerable people including the immigrants.
May his heavenly soul rest in peace and his legacy inspire all people for the humanity, fairness and protection to the powerless!

He was our esteemed and greaty loved family doctor in South Africa, and we last saw him in Thompson, N. Manitoba, when he and his wife traveled there to spend my birthday with me. I do not have enough space to document all that he a and wife did for my family at a time when my husband was desperately ill, and I have tried for years to reconnect with him; however, I'm so glad that I wrote about him in my book, The Bronze Killer (on the subject of Hemochromatosis) for someone who read the book recognized the name on Google and told me of his death. My heart goes out to the family.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Dr. Eric's passing. He was the most wonderful doctor who took the time to listen to you. If it wasn't for him, I would not have received the medical care I needed.

As a child I had all the flesh ripped from the bone from my knee down....even during this horrific time as a child, Dr. Eric Bodenstab's approach was calm, professional, and compassionate. He made me feel safe, secure and cared for. I will always be thankful of his care that day and all the days after! His love of helping human beings was always very evident! Germaine and the Bodenstab family,
Dr. Eric was not only my current physician here in Saskatoon, but also treated most of my family back in Tisdale. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, personally and professionally. Not only did he have a great mind for doctoring, but he had the common sense and compassion to go with that. And that made him a great man.
I can remember my Dad talking years ago about how he was one of many Tisdale businessmen who had signed up to sponsor this new doctor from South Africa to come to our little town. As a kid I had no idea what to expect. All expectations were exceeded.

What a wonderful man and doctor! I was his patient for about 4 years in Saskatoon. When he would walk in to the room, he would put his hands on my cheeks, lean over and kiss me on the forehead and ask "what can I do for you today, sweetie?" and then end the appointment in his office with a little visit. He always treated me and my kids with kindness and respect. I brought him chocolates once and cookies once. I hope he knew how much he meant to me.

I also was saddened to hear of Eric's passing. He was the first and only doctor I saw in Tisdale and always made me laugh, feel cared for and heard. When I look back, I actually looked forward to going to see my doctor, which not many people can say.

We are so saddened to hear of your loss. Like so many others, Dr. Eric was our doctor in Tisdale and when he found out our youngest daughter was living in Saskatoon and didn't have a doctor, he generously offered to look after her whenever she needed him. He even asked her to text me to say hello when she had an appointment! He never made a person feel like they were imposing on his time. We were lucky to have him in our community and in our lives. Eric was more than our doctor. He was our friend. We will miss him sadly. Our deepest sympathy to the Bodenstab family. Take comfort in the fact that your Dr. B was an amazing human being. Our deepest condolences.

It is with great sadness I learned of Eric's passing. I worked with Eric at Tisdale hospital and found him a very caring dedicated doctor. My prayers are with your family at this time of your loss.

I met Dr. Bodenstab 4 years ago when I was a walk in at his clinic and didn't have a doctor of my own. Dr.Bodenstab sat me down in his office and told me not only would he would accept me as a patient but my spouse as well. He was a great doctor and a great man. He will be impossible to replace.

Our hearts go out to the Bodenstab family, we only knew Dr. Eric since his move to Saskatoon and couldn't have wished for a better Dr. we do miss you Dr. Eric!

I extend my heartfelt sympathy to you, Dr. Eric's family. I will miss him terribly but feel so blessed to have known him. He was much more than my doctor; he offered genuine caring that was more powerful than any medicine. "Uncle Doctor" delivered my daughter 18 years ago and since then has become a regular part of our hearts and conversations. My daughter has a picture of Dr. Eric holding her as a newborn that is posted to her bedroom wall beside a prescription he wrote to her that reads, "be like a flower, bloom where you are planted". he was my doctor in tisdale and when he came to saskatoon, he went out of his way for me more times then i got a chance to thank him for, i trusted him with my life, great man, great doctor and will be missed dearly

Dr. B was our family doctor for 36 years first in Tisdale and then when he went to Saskatoon, we went with him. He was more than a Dr. he was a very special friend. He will be sorely missed by our family

God took his Angel home again. Our deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Eric. One of the few Doctors who took an actual iterest in you and your health. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Dr. Eric Bodenstab. Dr. Eric was our family Doctor in Tisdale. He delivered my youngest son, the same month that he became a Grandpa. So every appt we would talk about my 4 sons and his family. My oldest son doctered with him in Saskatoon. We all felt he was the best doctor ever.
My best memory is the day he delivered my youngest son as he was more worried about my husband than me.
