Ernest Chan Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Oct. 4 to Oct. 5, 2007.
CHAN Ernest b. May 28, 1926, Montreal, QC d. September 30, 2007, Vancouver, BC Ernest passed away peacefully at VGH following a stroke. He is survived by his step-mother, Katherine, sisters, Sally and Suzanne; brothers, Percy and Conway, 17 nephews and nieces and many great-nephews and great-nieces. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Irene in 1998. Ernest was born in Montreal. He and his family lived for a year in Havana, Cuba before moving to Shanghai in 1928. He grew up in Shanghai where he attended St. Francis Xavier School. When he was 7 years old his father put him on his lap and let him steer the car. In Shanghai, on weekends the family motored into the countryside to visit their orchards where there were plenty of peaches and soy beans. Ernest eventually became an experienced truck driver and motorcyclist. In 1947 he returned to Canada; living in Vancouver and eventually settling in Richmond in the 1970s. He was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserves in the 1950's, later he became a delivery driver for a florist. Ernie studied and got his real estate license in the mid 1960's and was a realtor for over 40 years, most recently with Royal LePage. Ernie was a snappy dresser who enjoyed people and partying. He had so many friends that I'm sure you'll find his photo in virtually every wedding album. He was a confirmed bachelor until he met and married Irene (nee Ng) in 1974. He and Irene loved traveling, especially cruises. Ernest believed that traveling broadened one's horizons. In his later years he enjoyed scanning and emailing treasured photos to family and friends. He enjoyed taking day trips, music, photography and classic movies. Ernest continued to enjoy people, befriending those from all stations of life, young and old. Many consider him their favorite ÃuncleÄ. He will be missed by his many friends and extended family. The family thanks the staff of Richmond and Vancouver General Hospitals for their efforts. A Memorial Service will be held at 4 pm, Saturday, October 6, 2007, Gilmore Park United Church, 8060 No. 1 Road, Richmond, BC. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. Following the service there will be a supper reception to reminisce and celebrate Ernie's life.

Uncle Ernie had an extraordinary sense of humour. He'd call me Phantom of the Opera when he hadn't received any news from me in a while... Thanks to him, we were able to put a name on many priceless family pictures! My thoughts are with you Uncle Ernie, I will miss you.

A wonderful, caring cousin. He was the
first long lost cousin to contact us in Montreal and that was 57 years. We will miss him.
