Ernest Craik Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 19, 2012.
In Loving Memory of

Ernest Arthur Craik
September 26, 1924 - April 16, 2012

Ernest Arthur Craik passed away peacefully at the LWDH, Kenora, Ontario, on April 16, 2012. Ernie was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on September 26, 1924 and lived on the family farm in Melfort area until 1947. He then moved east and worked for pulpwood logging companies in Northern Ontario. His family enjoyed the many interesting stories he told about his life in these camps. He went on to work at the Paper Mill in Kenora from 1957 until his retirement in June of 1989.

Ernie married Edna McLeod in October, 1961. Edna passed away in August 1989 shortly after his retirement. Together they devoted their lives doing for others. Ernie continued this with his countless volunteer hours at things like the Agape Table, being 'Caretaker, Treasurer and silent funder' for the Presbyterian Church, Injured Workers Advocate, volunteering at the Hospital and so much more. Ernie was a strong believer in the value of education and helped many local young people with their education expenses. In appreciation some of these students dedicated their thesis to Ernie for which he was very pleased. In recognition for his tireless efforts he received the Governor General's 'Caring Canadian' Award in 1998.

Ernie was predeceased by his wife Edna, three sisters Fern, Edith and Ethel and three brothers Jack, Frank and Milton. He leaves to mourn his passing his sister-in-law Cathie Martin of Georgetown, ON and brother-in-law Frank Conkey of Ajax, Ontario, as well as many nieces, nephews and their families.

We will remember with great fondness his bouquets of Gladiolas, his bountiful crops of raspberries, rhubarb, carrots, tomatoes and many other fruits of his labour nourished under his 'green thumb'. We will especially miss his special occasion feasts – he knew everyone's favourite dishes and ensured no one went home empty handed.
Ernie's family is thankful for the care he received during his short stay at Birchwood Terrace as well as the kindness and compassion shown to him during his time in the hospital. Also a sincere thank you to Cory at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre for the respect and guidance you have provided the family.

Immediate cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held this summer. At the families' request, flowers are graciously declined. If desired, donations to a charity of one's choice would be appreciated. In God's hands, he is at peace.

We often think of Ernie to this day and of his extraordinary example of a life well lived, his selflessness, simplicity, and dedication . . . in every aspect a genuine follower of Jesus Christ. He was a great man.

Ernie was a grand old man. I wish I could have known him longer. I enjoyed visiting with him and sharing....he gave me rhubarb and I gave him desserts. I also enjoyed taking care of his garden for him. My husband, John and I will miss him as a neighbour.

Mr. Craik---I feel so blessed to have known you and am thankful for all of the kindnesses you have shown. You were truly an example of Christian love to those around you, as beautiful as the flowers in your garden.

We will remember Ernie Craik as an authentic and faithful servant of God, Who has surely already welcomed Ernie into Heaven with the words, "Well done, My good and faithful servant!"
