Ernest Jermo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 31, 2025.
Ernest Joseph "Ernie" Jermo, age 82, of University Park, Florida, passed away on May 30, 2025.

Born on December 13, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, he was the beloved son of Joseph and Clara Jermo.

Ernie's life was marked by a deep commitment to family, service, and friendship. He is survived by his four children: Renee Findley, Jay Jermo, Tara Stewart Kuhnen, and William Stewart; his cherished granddaughters, Luisa and Miriam Kuhnen; and his sister, Michelle Ware. His presence will be deeply missed by those who knew him.

A proud graduate of Notre Dame High School and Wayne State University in Michigan, Ernie built a successful career in sales and marketing within the pharmaceutical and tech industries. His tenure at Xerox was especially meaningful-not only for his professional accomplishments but also for the enduring friendships he formed there. These relationships became a lifelong source of strength and comfort.

Ernie served honorably in the United States Army for six years as a Specialist 4th Class. He earned recognition as a sharpshooter and received commendations for good conduct. His military service took him from Fort Hamilton in New York to Stuttgart, Germany-experiences that shaped his worldview and sense of duty.

Known for his engaging personality and inquisitive mind, Ernie had a passion for sports and politics. He was always rooting for the "good guys" to win-whether cheering on the Detroit Red Wings or University of Michigan football from his home in Florida. A lifelong lover of the water, he found joy boating on Elk Lake and Lake St. Clair in Michigan and relaxing daily in his pool under the Florida sun.

In retirement, Ernie embraced the warmth of Florida living with gratitude and optimism-often saying with a smile, "Life is good." He remained intellectually active through weekly gatherings with a close-knit group of friends known as "BOP," where spirited discussions about current events were a highlight of his week. He also volunteered with the Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning's Foreign Policy lecture series, continuing to engage with global issues that mattered deeply to him.

Ernie treasured the companionship of Susan Hook and Richard Geifman during his years in Florida; their friendship became like family to him. His Catholic faith remained an important part of his life throughout the years-a guiding light that informed his compassion and care for others.

Per Ernie's wishes, no memorial service will be held. His ashes will be spread in Northern Michigan-a place close to his heart. He asked that all who knew him remember him as he was and hold onto the good times they shared together.

May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him and inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Ernie was a very close friend of mine. We met and became friends while he was working in Northern Michigan in pharmaceutical sales some 40 years ago. Even though he not so long after, moved to the Detroit area we remained friends throughout the rest of his life. We would call each other 2, 3, or even sometimes 5 times a week and had lengthy discussions often regarding politics, but also religion. His Catholic faith was very important to him and as his health was going downhill our conversations increasingly revolved around his faith. During the last month or so of his life and as he became convinced that he might not have much time left, he related on several occasions how he was having no problem with it and that in fact, he was very anxious to meet his creator. I will be missing him very much. Ernie was a class act!

I will always remember him as Uncle Ernie. He was always kind to me as I was the youngest of the kids on the Wieland side of the family. Rest in peace, Ernie. My thoughts and prayers go to my cousins Jay, Tara, and Will.

Your dad loved very deeply! He cherished you. I know you will miss sharing time together. His many experiences gave you wise advice, sometimes unwanted, but always well meaning and valuable. He loved being near water, whether living on Elk Lake, boating on Lake St. Claire, or enjoying his pool and the ocean in Florida. My love and condolences! So many memories! Love..

Ernie always looked out for me as a young man before his son earned a drivers license. A smart and funny gentleman. He will be missed.
