Ervil Swinney Obituary
Ervil Swinney, Jr. age 70 of Calera passed away Saturday, August 8, 2015. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Ervil was preceded in death by his parents: Ervil and Marie Swinney and his sister Betty Chandler. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Swinney, sons: Tracy (Tammy) Swinney, Tripp (Tammie) Swinney, Dabo (Kathleen) Swinney, Greg Minor and Jason (Amy) Miller; proud grandfather of ten: Taylor, Hank, Alex, Asher, Jack, Will, Drew, Clay, Blake and Braven; his sisters: June (Lee) Pilleteri, Patsy Parker (David) Johnson and Jackie (James) Cash; and many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends. Ervil was known for his wit and sense of humor and was loved by all. He will be deeply missed and may he rest in peace. His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at Pelham First Baptist Church with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Ridout's Elmwood Chapel, 205-251-7227, is directing.

I'm another Jones Valley alum who knew the Swinney kids from Tarpley City....Betty, June and Ervil especially. The Jones Valley Brownies are so sad to lose Ervil. I know you are all together as a family tonight so I wanted to take this opportunity to give you a sweet word about your mother. Joe Johnson, JV'54....has talked often about living with his very large family of 10 children in an abandoned unheated store building next door to the Swinney's back when he was a child in the '40's and '50's. He tells that he doesn't know if they would have survived without the kindness of Mrs. Swinney...who herself had five children to feed but who would share coal for their stove and some food to help his mother feed her hungry children. He has always had a deep need to tell you all how much Mrs. Swinney's kindness had meant to their very lives and she would always be in his memory. He'll be glad to know that you finally have learned of this. I think your whole family has inherited her caring Christian spirit. Our love and condolences to you all as you mourn. I cannot tell you how saddened I was to hear of Ervil's passing. We go WAY back to grammar school days, and graduated from JV in the class of '63. RIP my old friend. PS ... At least one of you girls rode my bus (I drove 191 in '62-63) to Lipscomb.

Do not know the Swinney family personally but love the Clemson Tigers, and think that Dabo is one of the greatest coaches they ever had.
