Erwin A. Herr, 88, a 24-year resident of Chapel Hill, NC, and a former 28-year resident of Fayetteville, New York, passed away Thursday morning, April 22, 2010 at University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill. Born in Muenster, Texas on January 12, 1922, he was the son of the late Emil A. and Emma A. Friske Herr. Erwin received his high school education at Hartford High School, Texas. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a BS degree, and received his master's degree from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a licensed professional engineer. Erwin was employed at General Electric Company in Schenectady and then in Syracuse, New York as an electrical engineer for 43 years. He represented his company on several international electronic standards committees. He published a number of technical papers. Irwin was a parishioner and communicant of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fayetteville, New York and St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Chapel Hill, NC. Erwin was a United States Army veteran of World War II serving his country from 1942 to 1946 as a Tech Sergeant in the Philippines Liberation. His wife of 58 years, Frances Duffy Herr predeceased Irwin on March 16, 2006. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Nancy E. Drennan; one brother, Raynold Herr (Dorothy); and two sisters, Sister Emma Marie Herr and Thelma Marie Herr. Erwin is survived by one son, James Herr and his wife, Kelly of Cazenovia, New York; one daughter, Kathleen M. Herr-Zaya and her husband, Thomas of Stoneham, Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Jeremy J. Herr (Michelle), Dr. Jared J. Herr and Katelyn A. Herr; one brother, Wilfred C. Herr (Leona); three step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The family would like to give special thanks to UNC Medical Center, University of North Carolina @ Chapel Hill, the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning at 10:15 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, New York followed at 11 by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Johnson, New York Calling hours are Tuesday from 5 to 7 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc. Memorial gifts in Erwin A. Herr's name may be made to UNC Medical Center, Cardiac Care Unit, Attn: Susan Blalock, 101 Manning Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

I had the opportunity to work for very short time with Mr. Herr in EP7. Although we did not see eye to eye all the time Mr. Herr was always the gentlemen and was a pleasure to have known. I am very sorry for your loss.
