Esther Legrand Clarke, 90, of West Pittston, died Tuesday in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

She was the widow of the late Michael Clarke who died in 1993.
She graduated from State Teacher's College in Mansfield with a bachelor's of science degree in education after which she was certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction to teach in public schools of Pennsylvania. A well-known teacher in the public schools of West Pittston Borough for more than 40 years before her retirement, she was recognized by students, parents and her associates alike as one of the most effective and dedicated teachers of her time. An avid and tireless reader, she was especially active with the West Pittston Public Library. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of West Pittston.

Surviving are her relatives in Wyoming Valley, Massachusetts and Ohio.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the Pittston Cemetery with the Rev. James E. Thyren officiating.

Arrangements are by Recupero Funeral Home, West Pittston.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the West Pittston Public Library or to the First Presbyterian Church, West Pittston.

As a 1971 graduate of Wyoming Area High School, I remember Ms Clarke as a fair, yet demanding instructor who possessed an easy sense of humor.

God bless her.
