Esther M. Valentine, 71, of Lafayette, passed away on Saturday, September, 28, 2013 at 4:35 a.m. at St. Elizabeth East. Esther was born on March 5, 1942 in Lafayette to the late Delbert and Jessie Rogers VanPelt. On March 6, 1964 she married Ralph Valentine in Lafayette, and he survives. Esther worked as a manager at Columbian Park for years. She enjoyed sewing and spending time with her family.

Surviving are three daughters, Tina (husband: Ron) Butcher of Lafayette, Christina M. (husband: John) Terry of West Point, IN, and Nina M. (husband: Jerry Kolthoff) Valentine of Lafayette, and one son-in-law, Jimmy Rhymer of Monticello, IN. Also surviving are two brothers, Melvin "Boe" VanPelt of Oxford, IN, and Tom (wife: Marilyn) VanPelt of Humble, TX, and three sisters, Connie Nortz of Branchburg, NJ, Rose "Rosie" (husband: Gene) Marchand of Delphi, IN, and Ann (husband: Duane) Terry of West Lafayette, ten grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren.

Esther is preceded in death by her daughter, Dannell Rhymer, a great grandchild, Sawyer VanHorn, and one brother, Jack Van Pelt.

Services will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior with Celebrant Chris Dodson officiating at Simplicity Funeral Care. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or Lafayette Cancer Network. Simplicity Funeral Care entrusted with care. Tina, Chrissy and Nina I am so sorry for the loss of your mother...I feel that I have known all of you for a life time and love all of you...I still remember her aldering my wedding gown and sticking me in the side with a straight pin.. Thought we were going to wet our self laughing... Well may God bless you all at this time of loss... I only wish that I could be there for all of you... I am in heart...Hugs and prayer's to all.. And take good care of your dad..He will need all 3 of you for a very long time...

Grandma, that title is taking what you ment to me lightly. You were my best friend, someone I could tell anything to with out judgement. You accepted me into your family without hesitation and loved me as if I was one of your own, for that I am ever so grateful. Thank you for all the wonderful memories you gave me. I will always deeply miss you but that is comforted knowing you are no longer in pain and are with your loved ones in heaven praising Jesus. Love you always your granddaughter - in -law Ashley

I'm sorry mother for not being there in the last hours of your life, I know you loved me as I loved you. I will remember you as the beautiful young woman that you were. Full of life, with some spice and vinegar. You always told it how you saw it in the 21 years I've known you. I hope to see you off soon, our last good bye, in all your beauty. I'll do my best to take care of your daughter, though I tend to be crass at times without knowing until it's too late. Hopefully we can keep Ralphs spirits high till your back together.

I was deeply saddened by the news of Esther's passing. I worked at the park for 9 summers with Esther as manager. The years at the park were the best years of my life and Esther played an important part in that stage of my life. I truly enjoyed working for her and working with her. She will always have a special place in my heart. My prayers are with Esther's family during this difficult time.
