Ethan Van Leuven Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 30, 2014.
24 November 2009 to
28 October 2014
Ethan Ronald Van Leuven, son of Merrill Ronald and Jennifer May Van Leuven, was born on November 24, 2009 in West Jordan, Utah. He passed away after fighting a long battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on October 28, 2014. Ethan was our superhero as he exemplified such traits as unfailing courage, faith, compassion, and being an example of goodness. From his earliest days until his final days Ethan was a fighter. He was mature for his age and managed to pass many developmental milestones earlier than his peers. He loved playing with balls and was frequently found kicking them around the house. This led to a love for the game of soccer. That hobby was cut short when he was 22 months old and was diagnosed. This didn't sway him. He still enjoyed the game but was content to watch. He soon developed an interest in puzzles, art, building Lego's, and playing video games (specifically Lego games) as his long and difficult stays in the hospital didn't allow him much mobility due to feeling sick or being connected to an IV tower. Through Legos, Ethan found out about Batman and Superman and their friends. Superheros became an easy love for him, especially as his fight with cancer became more intense. Ethan was always looking for ways to make people smile. He was shy around strangers but once a friendship formed, he would talk their ear off. He was an exceptional listener for his age and very observant. Ethan was quick to correct, but also quick to forgive. On days he didn't feel well, he would still manage to pull a smile for the camera. Ethan loved going to church. The week before his death, he wanted to go so bad, even walking all the way there through joint pain caused by his cancer. He even stayed an extra little bit to go to Primary and hear the songs sung which he loved. Ethan also had a love for Jesus Christ, evidenced by his love for Christmas. He loved looking at pictures of Him and would often comment about Him. In his final days, his story blessed the lives of many all over the world. Ethan will always be remembered as the superhero who brought the world together.
The family would like to express profound appreciation for so many who have lent support during Ethan's journey: Family, friends, neighbors, Primary Children's Hospital, Seattle Children's Hospital, Copper Hills 7th Ward, Copper Hills Utah Stake, the many various media outlets and news organizations who covered Ethan's story in such a positive light, and many others around the world who have followed his story. This journey would have been more trying without their love and support. Ethan's mission on earth would have been much more difficult without the faith and prayers of so many.
Ethan is survived by his parents, Merrill and Jen, his siblings, Brayden, Jerin, Makayla, Kason, Blake, and baby brother on the way, all his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many other extended family.
Funeral services will be held in Ethan's honor on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 11:30 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building on 5176 West Parr Drive (8430 South) in West Jordan, Utah. Viewing times are Friday, October 31, 2014 from 7:00-9:00 pm and Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 10-11:00 am at the same location. (Extra parking at Copper Hills High School). Dearest Van Leuven family,
It's taken me a year to reach out with a hug to each of you!
I got to know Ethan through KSL's stories of your sweet boy.
He touched my heart so tenderly. I've kept his beautiful picture in my phone as a reminder of the Angel from heaven on earth for a short time. The picture of Ethan by the tree with his superman outfit on! I have grandchildren and could never imagine the pain it would be to loose one of them.
Tears flow freely each time I see your beautiful family share your stories and love for your little man! Respect goes to Brayden for his love of his brother to give back to those who need his help!
Hugs, loves and prayers go out to you continually.

I only knew about little Ethan through the television story aired in southern Idaho. I was so touched by the outpouring of love and support shown in your area and of course the special events that took place. As I watched your sweet little boy, tears filled my eyes. I could see his beautiful spirit and know he is a special angel in the realms above. Thank you for allowing your story to be shared. I have thought of your family and Ethan several times this past month and just had to let you know. Prayers continue for families such as yours who have lost a child. May you continue to find the peace that the Gospel brings to us all.

Dear Merrill and Jen,
We remember seeing you and little Ethan while we were there at Primary Children's hospital undergoing chemotherapy with our daughter Sabrina who also had ALL. We lost our little Sabrina recently on October 22, 2014 after receiving news that she had relapsed back in July. Our hearts go out to you as parents....we KNOW how difficult this journey has been, and how hard it is to lose a child.
Please know that we have thought of you often and you and your family are in our hearts and prayers. We pray God's choicest blessings on you as you attempt to move forward without little Ethan....rest assured he is in good hands.

With much admiration for the long journey you have so faithfully endured,
Douglas & Esther Hammon

My heart is broken for your family and I can't even begin to imagine the sorrow you feel, but I pray that you find comfort in knowing Ethan made a lasting impression on people that have never even met him such as myself. I live in another state and he has touched my life in ways I never thought possible. What an amazing little boy you had the honor of knowing. I pray the Lord will comfort you during these trying times, until you are reunited with your sweet little boy.

My love and prayers go out to your family. I have never met you, but I feel like I know you in a sense. When I heard about Ethan, and the outpouring of love and community support I was touched. I wrote a poem that I sent to FM100. I was told they would forward that to your family. I titled it "Ethan's Holidays Came Early". My prayers are with your family. I am grateful you have the knowledge of eternal families, this can give you added peace and comfort. Thank you for being willing to share your story with the world. It is a reminder of the love and caring that is still in the world today. May our Heavenly Father bless you through this holiday season as you have your angel son by your side, celebrating without the pains of his physical body.

Ethan was an "earth angel" with his precious spirit on earth. He blessed everyone. He is pain-free and happy with his ancestors. His memory will become a treasure inside our hearts. He will not be forgotten. He gave us a great example of "enduring patiently" in this life.

November 1, 2014

I saw Ethan's story on the news and it broke my heart when I found out he already died. Looking through his pictures, the posts of other people who knew this wonderful kid, I could tell that Ethan was very special. His smile could light up a room. I admire his strength, his resilience, the joy he brought to to others and most importantly, his faith. And I would remember his story forever.

His story restored my faith in humanity and strengthened my faith in God.Your story has touched me and changed me forever.

I can't even begin to imagine what his family's been going through. All I know is that they've been strong all this time and I hope they continue to be strong moving forwards.

I would pray for your family and would continue praying for little Ethan.

I am grateful that I was able to participate in Ethan's birthday parade. It showed me that it may take a village to raise a child, but it took a child to bring the village together. I am so sorry for your loss, Sir Ethan was a special spirit. May he rest peacefully.

We have followed Ethan's story on the news and are grateful for his courage an your understanding. Sometimes we look backward and consider how different things would have been if only we'd have done “this” instead of “that”. But in Heavenly Father's grand plan, even with all the mercy He extends to us, He didn't give us the luxury of going back even a few hours in our lives and doing it over again. We have to go on from here, wherever/whenever “here” is, and make the best of things in our present and future.
My wife and I have in the past had a little portion of the grief you are agonizing with at this time. When we were in Wisconsin in 1966 getting my Master's degree, our second child was a little boy who lived only nine days. But the poor little guy had so many things wrong with him — heart problems, a collapsed lung, and several other things, that we decided it was best for him to return to Heavenly Father. I realize that your circumstance is somewhat different. You had the opportunity of having Ethan for nearly 5 years. But the promise is still the same — as a child who has passed away, he inherits the celestial kingdom, without the trials and tribulations that the rest of us have to go through. He must have been an especially sweet and valiant spirit, who only needed to come to earth for a while to obtain a mortal body, then he can progress on to his eternal reward. I know that is little consolation at this time, but when you consider the grand scheme of creation and the purposes of life, we can rejoice for him and know that he is being taken care of and that all the promises of growth and development and exaltation are open to him. As his little spirit left this earth, there were others; some grandmas and grandpas, uncles, aunts, and cousins, (and probably some others you don't even know, but he knows) with arms outstretched in welcome. He is not “gone”. He is OK and in good care.
I have absolute assurance that we will see our little boy again and that he is still part of our family. And I have the same assurance for you and your little one. He is still part of your family, and you will see him again and will be able to hold and cuddle him and yet share joyous times together.
The challenge and opportunity for you now is to plan and live your future so that you can earn a level of exaltation equal to his. Don't spend a lot of time worrying about what could have been. As much as we would like to change some things that have happened, that opportunity is not ours. We have to accept things as they are, then get on to other considerations, and spend time planning what can be, and do all that we can to make life a grand experience for all those yet around us.
May the Lord's choicest blessings be with you in your time of bereavement. Know that many prayers are being said for you. Heavenly Father knows of your concern. Your little boy is in good hands, taking care of him until you meet him again.

It is difficult to put into words or describe how much of an example your family has been to me of faith, courage and patience despite the trials you have had to endure with Ethan's leukemia and passing. I will always be grateful for that example you have so perfectly shown.

Through your sharing of Ethan's story I feel that my own faith has strengthened. Additionally, I have been able to gain a new found respect and appreciation for the goodness that still exists in this world today.

I wish I was able to make it to the viewing and funeral in person, but will definitely be there in spirit.

May the Lord continue to bless you as you go through the healing process.

This is my song for Ethan. RIP, Little Big Hero!

CHRISTMAS HAS COME EARLIER

Hi,
I'm the child who lives at the end of the street
Guess you heard me crying, sometimes

Today I won't
I've muscles and a cape today
I can fly as well
Like Superman
Kryptonite can't hurt me anymore

God came into my room, last night
He told me I was here to make a difference

CHRISTMAS HAS COME EARLIER
MOM, TAKE A PICTURE OF YOU AND ME
TO REMEMBER…DREAMS CAN COME TRUE…

SNOW HAS COME EARLIER
MOM, PLEASE STOP CRYING AND COME TO THE WINDOW
SEE SANTA CLAUS
LIGHTS ON THE ROOF ARE WRITING MY NAME…
…AND THEY ALL CALL ME A HERO…

I aked God an help, with a little bell
'cause I wasn't strong enought to change the Faith
Now, You see, I can fly
far from light
I find out the real splendor

I see Love all around me
With a little hose on my chest
I'm a kite

CHRISTMAS HAS COME EARLIER
DAD, SWITCH OFF THE LIGHTS AND LET'S GO TO PLAY
THEY'RE ALL OUTSIDE, WE CANNOT BE MISSING

SNOW HAS COME EARLIER
DAD, TAKE A PICTURE OF YOU AND ME
WE CAN'T FORGET THIS NIGHT…
CLOSA MY EYES...LET ME DREAM.

Merrill and Jennifer, thank you so much for sharing your little miracle Ethan with all of us. I knew Merrill while serving along with him in Toronto, even singing with him on a few occasions. Though time and distance have separated our association, I have not forgotten what a dedicated, kind gentle giant Merrill was as a missionary. This trait has been evidenced to the world through the Van Leuven family. Only a small number of people will actually know what you've gone through, and even a smaller number know how you feel. Yet your faith and devotion has inspired us all to hold closer those we love a little tighter and a little longer. Thank you for your courage, your devotion, your tears, your faith, and your love. Through you, Ethan has changed all of us for the better. Thanks again for sharing Ethan with us, especially those of us who never got the opportunity to meet this real life super hero. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
With Love,

I love Ethan, and I love all of your amazing family. You have taught me what faith truly is these past few years. There is nothing I can say that hasn't already either been said, or expressed in other ways. When I start finding it hard to accept and be at peace with what our precious Ethan has been through, I just have to think of your family, especially you, J and Merrill...and what tremendous faith you have shown over and over again during this trying time. As your big Sister, Jennifer, my heart breaks for you because I remember when you were Ethan's age, and so full of life...my little "sweet pea". Now you have grown into the strongest, most amazing Mother and Wife that I could ever know. It gives me peace to know that you guys, and your faith, are at peace. I am attaching a picture that makes me feel so warm because I know this is what Ethan is doing now...walking with Jesus. I love you all so much.

Dear Ethan,
We never met and yet you have changed my life. What a special and sweet spirit to be able to smile through the trials of your life. My heart has broken for you and the fact that our Heavenly Father needed to call you home so soon. The world will be brighter for having you in it and yet a little dimmer for having you gone. Rest in peace little superman. I will never forget you or the courage and love that you showed the world. My prayers are with you and your family. Love always.

Ethan memories: His giggle! Building Lego towers and knocking them down. Flexing his muscles. The last time I was with him he told me that Blake was his best friend and he showed me pictures on his ipad that spanned his illness. He explained what each machine was for and pointed out his favorite doctors and nurses. Every time he came to a picture when he had hair he'd say, "Look at my hair!" He was a funny little pumpkin and I miss him but I'm so happy that he is no longer suffering.
