Ethel Lee Martin Allen, 98, widow of John Leon Allen, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Clemson Downs. Born in Pacolet, SC, she was a daughter of the late George Fred and Laura Whitlock Martin. She attended Winthrop College. Mrs. Allen was a retired Elementary School teacher and Librarian. She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. She had been a member of the Mi Casa Garden Club, Anderson Women's Club, Pendleton Historic Foundation and a docent at Ashtabula Plantation in Pendleton. Her great joy was her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to read and kept in touch with family and friends with her letters and cards. Surviving are her daughter, Paula Allen Gray (Willis) of Concord, NC; grandchildren, Kimberly Gray Burton (Chris), William Scott Gray, Will Gray (Rachel) and Lindsey Gray; great grandchildren, Gray and Parker Burton and Joshua and Caleb Gray. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Allen was predeceased by sisters, Bernice Potter and Thelma Martin. Memorial services will be 11 AM, Saturday, June 16 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Pendleton. Mrs. Allen will be inurned in St. Paul's Episcopal Churchyard in Pendleton. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 193 Old Greenville Highway, Clemson, SC 29631. The family of Mrs. Ethel Allen would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Clemson Downs and Provident Hospice for their love and care. To Paula and family, our sincere sympathy on your losing your wonderful mother, Ethel. The Palmer family has many greats memories from all the years our families were Pendleton neighbors. And then again Ethel was our mom's neighbor at Clemson Downs. Every time throughout the years we encountered Ethel there was always that smile - always!
