Eugene J. "Gus" Garceau, 74, of Bedford, died March 19, 2020 at Elliot Hospital, surrounded by his wife and son, after a brief illness. Born in West Point, NY on December 22, 1945, he was the son of Alfred and Lorraine (Laventure) Garceau. Gus spent most of his life in the Manchester area. He was a graduate of Bishop Bradley High School. He went on to earn a Bachelors degree in civil engineering from the University of New Hampshire and a Masters degree in business administration from Northeastern University. Early in his career Gus lived in Cambridge, MA and worked as a structural engineer at Charles T. Main and Jackson and Moreland (Boston, MA). In 1975, he was recruited to work for Davison Construction Company (Manchester, NH) and he and his wife, Gail, made Bedford their home. The rest of Gus' career was spent working in hydroelectric power development for Seaward Construction Company (Eliot, ME) and then as a private consultant. Gus was a sports enthusiast – there wasn't a sport he didn't enjoy. But he especially liked soccer and took great pride in watching his son play…his daughter-in-law play…and most recently watching his grandchildren on "the pitch." Gus was a strong, proud, independent and authentic person. What meant the most to him was his family, his well-loved friends and the SNHU soccer players from around the world who considered him "Dad." He will be remembered by all as a loyal friend, loving husband, devoted father and irreplaceable Poppie. Gus leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Gail (Maloney) Garceau of Bedford; a son, Ryan Garceau and his wife, Meotis Erikson of Marblehead, MA; and his four grandchildren, Henri, Genevieve, Vivienne and Xavier. Gus' nine year old granddaughter said it all…"I know this is hard for you and me, but in our hearts, Poppie can never die." Exactly. SERVICES: Due to this unprecedented time, there are no services planned at this time. Memorial donations may be made to "Waypoint NH" and mailed to Waypoint NH, 464 Chestnut St., Manchester, NH 03105, or at www.waypointnh.org Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, Manchester is assisting the family with arrangements.

I was so sorry to hear about Eugene's passing, but after reading all the messages left for you and your family I was happy to hear that he had such a wonderful life. Grief never ends...But it changes. It is a passage, Not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness nor a lack of faith. It is the price of Love.May memories of Eugene and the love of your family and friends surround you and give you strength during this difficult time.

Gail & Family
We were very sorry for your loss. Claire and I found out about Gus's passing from some of your many friends around Town. It felt good to know that all your old friends are here for you. That togetherness was always important like when we all moved into town as a bunch of young families, projects sharing parties, projects, school building and Little League. Gus and I had some great times with engineering projects in NH and all the great engineering projects Gus had undertaken. We will always remember Gus as an important part of our Bedford community and remember him in our prayers and thoughts. We hope these memories will comfort you in the days ahead.

Darsie and I were so sorry to learn of Gus's passing. We remember Gus as a strong individual, a sports fan, and a warm and friendly man. We know what a difficult period this must be for you and we send you and Ryan our sincerest condolences.
A New Hampshire poet once wrote: . . . while you are yet in my memory, you will never wholly die. May Gus live on in your memory and in the memory of Ryan and his children forever.

Dear Gail and Ryan,
My heart wants to reach out and hold you quietly in these difficult days. This picture brings back many memories. What an amazing family he shepherded, with such quiet strength. Gus picked his words and moments to have a lasting impact, I know each of us can remember such a moment.
He loved Greg, Jim, Tracy and me, we were family. Gail, Tracy and I were together in Atlanta, when we learned of Jim's death in 2005. Gail helped our family get through those difficult days, her humor, often irreverent, lightened many moments. In these times of enforced separation, grieving will be more solitary for them.
Her grandchildren have already inspired her. May Henri, Genevieve,Vivienne and Xavier continue to be loving, caring children whose joy of life will comfort them.
We had some hilarious moments, I'm sure Ryan, you'll remember coming up to your kitchen after a thud and an uproar when Jim fell from his chair during one of our marathon bridge games. You and Greg shook your heads, 'what's wrong with these people'? But it was what was perfectly right for us, then and for many years after that.
Ryan, I remember you calling to tell me you were going to ask Meotis to marry you. You were soooo happy and a bit nervous. You are a match (soccer reference) made in heaven!
Being a grandfather softened Gus as he watched you and Meotis embrace your growing family with love and joy, and soccer.
Many of our happiest moments were on the soccer fields in so many tournaments in so many places, with so many stories.
May he now rest in peace, singing along with Moms Murphy and Peg playing the piano.

Our love to Gail, Ryan, Meotis, Henri, Genevieve, Vivienne & Xavier - Gus (Poppie) was genuine to the core. To say he was kind-hearted or generous is an understatement. He was a role model for so many... for us and our children. Always an interested listener to every generation, always full of compassion and concern. We will miss him tremendously.

Gail - how tragic! I am so very sorry to learn of Gus' passing. 49 years together - WOW! Not many people can claim that these days - how fortunate to have shared your lives that long. While you have been blessed by this time together, the length will also make this loss incredibly hard to deal with. I am so happy reading of your incredible family and knowing that they will be there to fill in some of the blanks and lonely moments. As a wonderful friend, Kathy and I will be thinking of you and praying for you. I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through. Let the love surround you, and the memories comfort you.

Dear Gail: My SECOND favorite memory of Gus is of the spring day we walked to the dining hall singing the Beatle's song I wanna hold your hand. He couldn't carry a tune, but he made up for it in enthusiasm and volume! My FIRST favorite memory is of him in front of the bar at SAE with the person he most wanted to hold hands with you! You (of course) were so bubbly, and he was so happy! E-U-U-gene always knew from then on what a lucky guy he was!
