Hi Dorothy,
I'm so sorry to hear about Eugene's passing. We haven't been back to Calgary in two years so I just found out from a contact at ACAD. Both Linda's and my heart are with you. I look back with fond memories to the times spent teaching with Eugene and getting together for dinners with he and you. He was always the voice of reason and a very compassionate man. I wish I could have been there for his Celebration of Life.
With sincerest condolences,
Pat and Linda Bennett

Dear Dorothy Meiko Jason and Kevin
I am an old friend from Eugenes Fusion Graphics days
Along with Marty and Cam
Conrad would remember me well
I received the news of EOs passing to late to make it into Calgary.
I am so very sorry for your loss and ours. EO (as I knew and called him) was a very fine man.
Full of life's passions and laughter.
I remember so well how we would have lunch together in the park near Fusion Graphics .
And share everything and nothing about life, art, you and the kids
He had a very old soul that was as strong as it was tender.
The world has lost that soul and a great artist
I am deeply saddened we have lost that.
I will recall his laughter and will use it to inspire me when painting.
EO - Ouch -my dear old friend you were the best . Thankyou
My sincere condolences to you and all your family
Love to you all
AJ ( as he would call me )

It is with great sadness that I heard about Eugene. I remember with fondness his wonderful sense of humour and commitment to his students and art and design. I had the opportunity to work with Eugene during my time at ACAD and enjoyed our many casual conversations. My sincere condolence to his family.

Dear Dorothy, Mieko, Jason and Kevin,
We were so saddened to hear of Eugene's passing. While living in Hawkwood, Eugene was a wonderful neighbor. I will always remember him for the advice he gave me 20 years ago to plant the two blue spruce trees close together as they would receive energy from eachother and grow and thrive. As we drive around the old neighborhood today, they are two of the tallest trees on the block!
After attending Eugene's memorial service yesterday, it is clear that Eugene had much influence on so many people's lives and they too grew and thrived due to him.
We are thinking of you in your time of sorrow.

To Dorothy, Mieko, Jason and Kevin: My most heartfelt condolences to you all on the passing of Eugene.
The very first time I met Eugene was when we all went to the Bob Dylan / Tracey Chapman concert in Edmonton in 1989. Mieko, Brent and myself were roomates on Whyte Avenue sharing a tiny flat, but the walls had several large pieces of Eugene's amazing art. Brent and I thought Mieko had the coolest Dad ever. And he still is, and always will be for you.
Much Love, Bryan

Dear Dorothy,
I was saddened to hear of the loss of your dear husband, Eugene. Alison and Karl have told me so much about him and their high regard for him as a colleague and friend.I know how much sorrow there is losing your soulmate, and I offer you my deepest sympathy.
March 19, 2010
Dear Dorothy, Mieko - my early childhood friend, Jason and Kevin,
I am so sad to hear of the loss of your lovely husband and father. I have a child's memory of Eugene. I remember him creating things to complement our play and how he would wind up joining in, enthusiastically! I remember being parented by Eugene and Dorothy - both hugged and scolded - and always welcomed with friendship and love.
I am tearful as I read the memories and tributes of others in this guest book and wonder at how lucky we all were to have known Eugene. I am so very sorry for your family's loss and the loss of the many communities of which Eugene was a part.
Much love,
Tiffany Saxton

I am extremely sadden by loss of Eugene,
What fun we had at the Media Department at Mount Royal University in the seventies, Eugene and I created so many fun things for the educational programs we made together. He had a wonderful ability to take an idea that was in our heads and put it on a piece of paper or in media. It was the best experience of my life the way he could make us feel with his unique talent.
Eugene, I and his brother Ron played hockey for Zenith Graphics some time ago, what fun, even now it still makes me smile and laugh when think about those times.
It’s a great loss…..for all of us.

Mieko,
I was truly sorry to hear of your father’s passing. While words may provide little comfort at such an overwhelmingly sad time, just know you are in the thoughts of many. Children are an extension of their parents, so what an amazing legacy he has left the world! I believe your father will live on through all that you are, all that you do and most importantly forever in your heart and memories.
My deepest sympathy to you and your family.

I am so sorry to hear Eugene is gone. The first thing I remembered when I saw his picture was his beautiful infectious laugh. I met Eugene when he worked with my Dad, Earl, at Mount Royal College many years ago, and as a child I saw him as one of the coolest adults I had ever met. I never lost that impression of him.

To Dorothy, Mieko, Jason and Kevin,
We cannot adequately express our sadness at Eugene's passing and your loss. To say he was a wonderful man, father, husband and friend falls far short of the mark. To say Eugene and you made an important difference in my and Andrew's life cannot sufficiently capture our gratitude and caring. Andrew, Pierre and I will miss a kind, talented and wonderful man. We wish you love and comfort at this difficult time and know that his energy and spirit will live with you forever.
With much love,

Dear Dorothy, Mieko, Jason and Kevin,
We were so saddened by the news of Eugene's passing. I had looked forward to getting together with him again on my next visit back to Calgary.
Eugene was a delightful colleague, always open and optimistic and, above all, cheerful.
I think he received far too little appreciation as an artist. His paintings were large, physical and deeply steeped in meaning. During the "That Still Place..." show I realized how much research and effort went into them. Working with Eugene on that show was a real treat, and I think we changed from being good colleagues to being good friends then -- I miss him very much already.

Dear Mieko,

I was so saddened to read about Eugene's passing. I met him in the mid '80s when he did some design work for a colleague. I remember him as a kind, creative man who was very easy to talk to. When I met my eventual husband (who then worked at the Loose Moose Theatre), I asked Eugene if I could hire him to make a birthday card for my "intended" -- Eugene made a wonderful pop-up "moose" card, and he wouldn't take a cent for it. Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of your husband, dad, and friend.

I went all thru school in Vernon with Eugene, and he was a good friend and classmate.
He had such a good sense of humour and was always happy.
I was hoping he would make it to one of our get togethers in Vernon, but, alas, that is not now possible, altho, I think he will be there with us in spirit.
Please accept my greatest condolences in Eugenes passing.
He will be sorely missed by all of us.

Wendy and I were shocked to hear the news of Eugene's death. We were students with Eugene at the Alberta College of Art way back in the sixties and we got to know him quite well then and connected again when we all lived in Ontario and again when we moved back to Calgary. I was fortunate to work with Eugene when he was Chair of Design at ACAD. I will always remember him as a kind and thoughtful human being who always took the feelings of others into account in any decision that had to be made. He was very proud of his backyard pond and his KOI and we had many discussions about my attempts to do the same in my yard. What a great loss to the Calgary art and design community. My sincere condolences to his family and all the people who knew and respected him. Eric Fechter ( Former Chief Operating Officer - ACAD)

I took a printmaking course from the long haired enthusiastic Eugene in the 70's when I was a teenager in Dundas Ontario. He was a great inspiration for me to continue in the arts and it was wonderful to meet up with him again many years later teaching at ACAD. What a fabulous legacy to have inspired so many artists over the years. You are in our hearts.
