Fawzy MORCOS Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Mar. 8 to Mar. 9, 2016.
MORCOS, Dr. Fawzy Helmy
February 28, 1933 - March 5, 2016
It is with sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved husband, father and grandfather who passed away peacefully at home on March 5th. Mourning his loss are Corry, his loving wife of 46 years; children Rebecca (Harold), Nathan (Noelle), Camila and Theresa (Kevin); grandchildren Madeleine, Auke, Samuel, Joachim, Miriam, Callum, Nicolas, Owen and Jacob; sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews; as well as many friends, colleagues, former patients and students.
Fawzy was born in Assyut, Egypt and completed his medical degree in Cairo. He did post-graduate training in obstetrics and gynecology in England and it was there that he met his life's companion, Corry. They married in 1969 and subsequently moved to Edmonton where he began a long and thriving career both in private practice and academia. His primary passion was bringing new life into the world and he rejoiced in delivering approximately 25,000 babies, including many high-risk pregnancies and difficult births. He was much-loved by his patients and respected by the medical staff he worked with for his gentlemanly and professional manner and his compassionate nature. He was a skilled surgeon, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Misericordia hospital for 15 years and recipient of the Outstanding Physician Award in 2000 from the Capital Region Medical Staff Association. Many of his efforts in improving maternal care were considered ahead of his time, including introducing the rooming-in of newborn babies with their mothers (the first hospital in Canada to do so) and piloting a then-revolutionary hospital-based midwifery program in the 1980's.
Another passion of Fawzy's was education, most clearly evident in his decision to pursue a Masters degree in Educational Psychology in the midst of a very busy practice in the mid-'80s, the focus of which was maternal-infant bonding. He was an associate professor at the University of Alberta and taught many medical students, interns and residents to whom he passed on his values. He organized 33 conferences where he focused on integrating the disciplines of medicine, law and ethics. He sat on several ethics' boards and was involved in extensive collaboration with the Department of Education at the U of A which culminated in an honorary alumni award in 2014.
Fawzy had a strong faith in Jesus Christ, which was expressed in a deep and abiding principle that each human is made in the image and likeness of God and is worthy of care and respect from the moment of conception onwards. He led a life of service and generosity, helping people in all walks of life, and was a father figure to many. In the last few years of his life he was very involved in his Coptic Orthodox Church community, where he sat on the board of deacons and helped direct the establishment of a renovated church building and new community centre.
As a husband, "Nabil" was Corry's joy and the love of her life. As a father, "Papa" was a loving model of integrity and compassion and his children were blessed by his gentleness, understanding and good humour. As "Grandpa" he loved to play and was always up for a board or card game. He was a loving and generous brother to all his sisters. While we grieve our loss, we rejoice that he is in the arms of his loving Father in heaven. A special thank you to the wonderful palliative home care that provided support and allowed Fawzy to pass away peacefully at home.
Visitation will be at the Glenwood Funeral Home, 52356 Range Rd 232, Sherwood Park, from 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM on Friday, March 11.
Funeral will be at St. Mary and St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church, 5803 11a Ave, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 12.
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary;
they will walk and not be faint.

I've been thinking about Dr. Morcos a lot lately as we are expecting our first grandchild. I was considered a high risk pregnancy and was referred to Dr. Morcos who delivered all 3 of my children. He was a wonderful person who I will always remember fondly....even now, as a senior, it brings tear to my eyes when I think of him. It would be so wonderful if my children could have such a fine doctor deliver their children. RIP.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My plan was to give the doctor a copy of my story of my 'Mother Teresa" painting and how he helped me live my dream of becoming a professional artist on Vancouver Island. I am so sad that I was never able for him to read my story - of which he was such a contributing part.

Corry and family,

We were very sad to here the news that Dr. Morcos has passed away. He delivered all four of our kids. We often tell people what a blessing you all were to our family. Just today, we were sharing about how cool you both were and I decided to see what you were up to. Our hearts sank.

I want to let you all know that the kids Dr. Morcos delivered are all blessings to the world. God bless you all. Our sincere condolences, and hugs to you. If you ever find yourself in Puerto Vallarta, please let us know so we can deliver the hugs in person.

I delivered both of my sons with the guiding and caring of Dr Fawzy, and Corry. 30 years later, my husband still remembers how comforted I felt when Dr Fawzy came into the delivery room!
I've not seen either of them for all these years, but still have the comfort of their care with me. ( I even named my wonderful cat after him!)
So much respect for a beautiful soul! Thank you, Dr Morcos, for all you gave and shared
May God bless you and your family

Dear Corry and family
I worked for many years with your husband; your father. It was a privilege and honor to be there by his side during the many good times, and occasional sad ones. He was the consummate professional and gentleman. He worked extremely hard for his patients but also for his co workers. I was a better nurse for his support. I wish you all peace and also a gentle reminder of all the joy he brought to this world.

I did not know Dr. Morcos personally, however he delivered both of my children. I felt compelled to share some stories about your husband and father, so that you know what a positive impact he had on those whose lives he touched. Dr. Morcos possessed all the qualities of a gifted physician, including insight,compassion, intelligence, and skill. During my first pregnancy, my father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away within the year. I will never forget Dr. Morcos for the emotional and medical support he provided during my pregnancy. He promised he would be there for the birth of my son, and he was - arriving in a tuxedo on his way to a formal dinner! For the birth of my second child, Dr. Morcos said that he would be present for the birth if he could, as long as it wasn't at 3 in the morning. My son WAS born at 3 am - and when the nurses called Dr. Morcos, he immediately made his way to the hospital and was there for my son's birth! Finally, during my medical appointments, Dr. Morcos took the time to talk about subjects other than pregnancy, and many of his insights with respect to his own educational journey inspired me to pursue graduate education myself. These are stories I tell my children to this day. Dr. Morcos made the world a better place, and will be remembered by many.

Sincerely,
Jenifer Fontaine

My three children were delivered by Dr. Morcos and we had many discussions during that time of his passion for education and women's reproductive health. I was honoured to be with him and Corry as he was awarded the U of A Alumni Honour Award in 2014. God bless Corry - my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Dr. Morcos' had such a beautiful heart for the women and children he served in his profession. He had an amazing awareness of the dignity, worth, and value of human life from conception forward. The last time I saw him my daughter had been diagnosed with cancer and he had such compassion. He raised 4 amazing children and had a long-standing marriage. His greatest reward is in heaven. We will say a Novena in his memory.
