Florence Loretta Mazyck Brewton was born on September 3, 1933, the daughter of the late Willie E. Mazyck and the late Gold Roosevelt Waring Mazyck in Eutawville, South Carolina. She departed this earthly life and gained her heavenly wings on October 16, 2022.
Florence was a current member of Jehovah Baptist Church. Following the footsteps of her own mother- who had a passion for education and learning, Florence’s notable achievements include growing up in Bonneau and contributing to the family farm including “driving a tractor at a young age” and being able to cook for the family at ten years old. She was the Valedictorian of her senior class at Bonneau High School, Class of 1953. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science at Morris College, Sumter, SC in 1957 and her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education at Lehman College, Bronx, NY. She worked for the Board of NY in District 12 of the Bronx, NY and successfully completed at least four 30-hour certificate programs after obtaining her graduate degree.
Florence earned and educated two children and was actively involved in the education of her grandchildren. Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, games, playing solitaire on the computer, housekeeping and decorating, coin collecting, watching detective shows, game shows and Christian television, and listening to information radio. She enjoyed collecting recipes and preparing food in the kitchen especially during holidays. Some of the family favorites include her turkey soup, carrot salad, macaroni and cheese, candied yams, her Red Rice and Hoppin John!
Florence was preceded in death by her siblings, Anderson (Lendme) Mazyck, Abraham Mazyck, Eugene (Margaret) Mazyck, Franklin (Mary Lee) Mazyck, Flora (Gabriel) Laval, Robersine (Jacob) Stone, Joseph (Mary) Mazyck Sr., Robert (Mary Belle) Mazyck and Willie Edwin Mazyck Jr.; and brother-in-law, Thomas Ravenell.
Florence leaves to cherish her memories: children, Donna V. B. King and Stuart Craig Brewton; grandchildren, Anthony Christopher King, Jr., Danae Naomi King, Justin Ryan King, Matthew Elliot King, Sia Hope Brewton, Sanaa Grace Brewton and Sidney Faith Brewton; siblings, Addie Lou Mazyck, Ann Rebecca Ravenell, Julia Belle M. (Samuel Sr.) Boyd, Myrtle (William) Nelson and Vida Joy Mazyck; and a host of other relatives and friends.
“She will surely be missed by all who loved her.”

Florence Brewton, Ms. Flo, was a faithful teacher in Northwood Church's Wednesday night children's program for many years. I was her supervisor and could always count on Ms. Flo. She taught our 4 and 5 years old children and truly had the heart to impress God's word on the hearts of the children. She and I began experiencing grandparenthood together and shared many new grandparent stories, so some of you that are her grandchildren, I heard about you from the beginning. I am sure she is having a grand time in heaven with our Lord and Savior.
