Floyd Self Obituary

Published by Austin American-Statesman on Oct. 22, 2017.
SELF Jr., Floyd Glen Floyd Glen Self, Jr. of Lometa, Texas died peacefully in his home Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at the age of 71. Floyd was born September 8, 1946 in Fredericksburg, Texas. His family moved to Austin and then to Creedmoor by the time he was 6. He graduated from Del Valle HS in 1964 and Southwest Texas State Univ. in 1969 (BA Industrial Arts). He enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1968. Over a 37-year military career, he served as a paratrooper and a supply officer for the 111th Area Support Group (Austin), won numerous marksmanship awards, and deployed multiple times before retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CWO4), the highest CWO rank at the time. An ardent Longhorn, Floyd proudly worked for the University of Texas from 1974 to 2008, retiring as the Director of Purchasing. He also raised cattle in Creedmoor with his father until 1996. He retired to Lometa, where he greatly enjoyed tinkering, tending a vegetable garden, watching deer, hanging out with lazy old dogs, and delivering mail from time to time. He also fulfilled a long-time dream of running his own gun shop, Lometa Firearms Company. Throughout his life, Floyd loved hunting and fishing trips with friends and family, making and repairing all manner of things, country music dancing, restoring old cars and tractors, following Longhorn sports, supporting wildlife conservation, and, especially, fixing stuff for family and friends. Floyd died in his sleep of a pulmonary embolism following recent surgery for prostate cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd G. Self (d. 1996) and Mildred L. Self (n?e McFarland; d. 1978). He is survived by his brother, Steven, three sons, Ronald (wife: Denise), Trevor (wife: Jennifer), and Christopher, one nephew, Steven, two grand-daughters, Cali-Megan Miller and Madison Self, and many beloved friends. He is deeply missed. There will be a visitation on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 2620 S Congress Avenue. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to organizations that conserve the natural and cultural heritage of the Texas Hill Country, which Floyd dearly loved-e.g., Hill Country Land Trust; Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. I went to high school and graduated with Floyd at Del Valle. He was amazing in our shop class--he made a beautiful electric guitar from scratch. Floyd excelled in this class so it is no surprise that he carried that skill into his career. He also had a 1955 red and white Crown Victoria which he fixed up. It was the envy of most of the guys in our class. I lost contact, but reconnected at our 50th reunion. Glad to see he followed everyone's dream of working for UT.

Over the years you taught me so much and here you go teaching me something else - don't ever take dear friends for granted because they're gone way too soon. I'll miss you so much -

I've worked with Floyd in the 90's at UT in the Purchasing Office. He was a great boss. I have nothing but fond memories about that time. I was sad to hear about his passing. Floyd is going to be missed. My condolences to the family.

"looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared 'neath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye
And now I'm glad I didn't know the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss the dance.
Holding you I had everything
For a moment wasn't I a king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey who's to say you know I might have changed it all
And now I'm glad I didn't know the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss the dance."
Always and Forever, Barbara

Floyd and I hunted together for many years. We bought a ranch together and we were partners in the Whitetail breeding business. I could not have hoped to have a better partner. I will always cherish our time together. I learned much from Floyd about so many things. He was a great friend and an even better business partner. Rest in peace my friend!

I had the privilege of working with and for Floyd for several years, and he was always there for me. We didn't always agree on the solution to issues, but he had a wonderful way of allowing my opinion to be considered. We continued to remain friends after retirement and emailed each other from time to time.
I will miss him and his sarcasm and quick wit. Rest well my friend.
