Anyone who knew Frank Giuffrida could see that he loved his family and his friends with an enormous passion. Our family had the distinctive privilege and pleasure to have the Giuffrida Family first as our neighbors and then our friends for over 30 years. Our families have grown together over the years and experienced much joy. Now our Dear "Uncle" Frank is gone and we have so many happy times to remember and keep his memory alive in each and every one of us.
We will miss you and love you always.
Rest In Peace, Frank ~ Until we are all joined together again.

A Tribute to Mr. Frank Giuffrida
This man that we know as Frank Giuffrida one time had a wonderful dream.
He was just a young man making his plans perhaps beside a beautiful stream.
Now he said to himself glancing up to the lord “What should I do with my wonderful life?”
Please my friend in the sky guide me to do for others helping them in their strife.
The idea was placed in that humble kind head to gather people by near and by far.
All of a sudden he saw tables and chairs and ah yes a wonderful bar.
Slowly but surely they came and still came to be happy, to eat, and to drink.
The years have flown by as he fulfilled his dreams He took the good with the bad tossing aside everyone’s schemes.
This man with his kindness and dedication to all has never faulted or fretted but just climbed his own wall.
When I came to his business to help and to earn I found it a pleasure and a place one could learn.
Learn how one prospers as a result of his deeds as I watched him be happy catering to everyone’s needs.
The public will always love and remember this man a person who has given so much from his heart.
God bless this servant of yours may he be well Keep his ambitions alive; may they never depart.
We’ve all enjoyed your favor, your dreams and all you did whether at work or at play you talented individual thanks for everything and don’t you dare ever go away.
Your dreams have come true and life has been grand Because you were determined to hold ideas by the hand.
When we think of the Hilltop we bless you from one and from all
may your life always be super and forever and ever have a ball.

Frank Giuffrida BIO
Born and raised in Lawrence, Giuffrida spent his early years working as a butcher in the family business. “My family on both
sides was in the meat business in Italy, but I always wanted to have a restaurant,” he told the New York Times in a 1988
interview.
So, in 1961, he spent $7,000 on a Route 1 gin mill in Saugus and opened a 125-seat steak restaurant. Asked why he selected that location, Giuffrida said, “I counted the cars driving along Route 1 and saw a business opportunity.”
Within 10 years, Giuffrida had expanded his restaurant six times, creating a 1,400-seat steak house that by the early 1970s
consistently ranked among the largest and highest-grossing restaurants in the nation. Even with the expansions, the line of
customers waiting to dine on a weekend could stretch 100 yards or more.
Despite his success, Giuffrida was willing to do most anything to keep the restaurant running smooth – even if it meant filling in for his meat cutter, who was on an extended absence. His chef noticed the steaks seemed “heavier” than usual, so he investigated and found Giuffrida slicing the meat. “I should have known it was you, Frank,” the chef said.
The illuminated 68-foot cactus-shaped sign in front of the Hilltop and the plastic cows “grazing” by the entrance are some of
the most recognizable landmarks in New England. Equally legendary was his ability to understand and appreciate people, particularly his staff, who years after his retirement fondly remember his kindness, modesty and generosity. Giuffrida sold the restaurant in 1988.
For his success as a restaurateur, Giuffrida was inducted into the Massachusetts Restaurant Association’s Hall of Fame in
1997. Giuffrida was also involved in the community. In the 1960s, he became the first president of the Route 1 Business Association. He was also active in several local parishes, particularly St. Anthony’s of Revere. In addition he was a life
time member of the Lawrence Sons of Italy.
Giuffrida contributed to many area causes. Most were done anonymously, though a
1979 gift to the Saugus YMCA jump-started construction of the Y’s new outdoor center. In return for his gift, YMCA officials named the center in Giuffrida’s honor.
Giuffrida died Wednesday December 31, 2003 , one day after suffering a stroke. He was surrounded by his family and several close friends when he passed away.
Giuffrida is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Irene, who helped him grow the business and raise their family. He also leaves two daughters, Santina Giuffrida Primavera and Gina Giuffrida Noto, both of Lynnfield; two son-in-laws,
Robert F. Primavera and Robert A. Noto; and four grand children, Francesca Primavera, Caterina Primavera, Robert Noto,
and Evelyn Noto. Donations in lieu of flowers maybe made to the Frank Giuffrida Memorial Fund C/O St. Agnes Parish,

To the Giuffrida family: I am so sorry for your loss you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I went to Lynnfield High School. We were the 1986 State Softball Champs. My coach Bob Lesser took us to the Hilltop to ask Frank for champion jackets. I remember going into his office . We asked as a team if he would buy our jackets. His reply was I will under one condition that all of you promise me that if you see my daughters in school please always say hi and be nice to them. A true family man. I will never forget that.

What a man, one of a few that could think while standing tall.
We did not know him , but his places of business spoke very well of him.
My large family have enjoyed his meals at both restaurants for many years. Any family occasion was a
good reason to get to a Hilltop.
Our sincere sorrow on his passing on,
he will sorely be missed by all.

I worked at Hilltop for ten years, from 1974-1984, I was a single mother like many of the girls at the time. Were it not for Frank and Irene's kindnesses to the girls, I believe many of us would not have been able to support our children.
Irene and her family will be in my prayers.
Thank you,
Jessie,Kansas City.
