Frank Henry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 4, 2013.
Henry, Frank Myron
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Frank Myron Henry on July 28, 2013. Frank was born on August 22, 1934 in Long Beach, California to Mildred and Ray Henry. Frank moved with his mother to Arizona in the 1940s. It was while attending Phoenix College in the 1950s that he met Frank Lloyd Wright who inspired him to become an architect. He was the first person to receive a Bachelor of Architecture degree in the State of Arizona when he graduated from Arizona State University in 1960. At ASU he studied under two former Frank Lloyd Wright apprentices, Charles Montooth and Fred Langhorst. His graduate thesis was selected as the outstanding thesis in architecture in the United States in 1960 by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and was exhibited at the Octagon in Washington, DC in 1961. While serving in the U.S. Army and stationed in Fulda, Germany, Frank met his wife, Ruth. Together they raised their three children, Christopher, Eileen and Susan, in Glendale. Upon retirement, Frank and Ruth moved to Scottsdale where Frank pursued his true passion by volunteering, teaching and mentoring at Taliesin West. Frank worked in the architectural profession for over 40 years in Arizona, with more than 30 years at DWL Architects. He has worked on the design for many award winning buildings including airports, university buildings, hospitals, banks, and churches. In 1992, his design for the branch bank at 44th Street and Camelback Road for the Valley National Bank was nominated by the Central Arizona Chapter of the AIA for the 25-year award given to one building in the United States each year.
Until his passing, Frank was still active in art and architecture. As Studio Master emeritus, Frank taught Hand Rendering and Perspective Drawing at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, and participated in design project mentoring and critiques. Frank gave architectural tours, lectures, and has written publications related to the unique architecture and ecology of the southwest. Frank was very active with the architecture preservation movement in Phoenix, contributing to efforts to save key modern landmarks such as the David Wright house in Arcadia. Despite his accomplishments, Frank was a very humble man. Frank's family is deeply honored that The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation has established the Frank Henry Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor his legacy. Frank experienced a pinnacle in his career in May of this year when he visited a traveling exhibit that included some of his works in Stuttgart, Germany. He enjoyed traveling to see architecture in other countries and on this trip he visited the Metropol Parasol in Seville, Spain. In addition to architecture, Frank's interests included wildlife, nature, Native American culture, history, sports, hiking (including the Grand Canyon eight times), classic cars, traveling to Southern California and competing in athletic events, most recently receiving a silver medal for his age group in the long jump at the Grand Canyon Games. Frank was preceded in death by his father and mother. Frank will be greatly missed by his devoted wife of 54 years, Ruth; his son, Christopher Henry; daughters, Eileen Henry and Susan Henry; and cat, Mietzi. A public memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Taliesin West in Scottsdale. For more information: www.franklloydwright.org. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish to do so make a donation to the Frank Henry Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation has created a special fund to honor Frank Henry's legacy as a beloved mentor to students in The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. The Frank Henry Memorial Scholarship Fund will support scholarships at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture for students who exemplify Frank Henry's ideals of poetry in design, environmental responsibility, and a passion for architecture. Gifts may be made to The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and sent to The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Attn: Frank Henry Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 4430, Scottsdale, AZ 85261. Gifts may also be made directly to The Frank Henry Memorial Scholarship Fund online at: https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/frankhenrymemorialscholarship. Hi Frank,

Thanks for all your lessons!
I too, enjoyed being your mentee...

Thesis turned out pretty successful. I am sorry that I could not invite you to my defense.
I still remember many things that I learned from you and apply them to design everyday.

I cannot thank you enough.

Miss you a lot!

Fifteen years is about how long I've known Frank. He unselfishly shared his considerable knowledge and talent. A couple of years ago I came to him for some ideas about my landscape redo. In a few weeks he presented me with the most beautifully drawn landscape plan. Many of us were touched by his kindness.

Once, after properly introducing him to a group as Studio Master Emeritus, I added that he was one of my 'favorite people', which he was. He seemed rather surprised.

The other morning at Taliesin West I looked toward his usual park spot for that indescribable VW he drove, later toward his drafting table as I passed the studio and finally.. I looked up at the sky and it was clear and blue.

My sincere condolences go out to Ruth and his family. Frank will surely be missed by those of us who are his family of friends.

The U-Haul Team is saddened by the passing of Frank Henry, award-winning architect, teacher and Studio Master emeritus at the Frank Lloyd Wright (FLW) School of Architecture at Taliesin West. Frank was a good friend to U-Haul over the years. His tours of the U-Haul House (designed by Mr. Wright for the Price family in the 1950s) were always informative and entertaining. He was a gracious and kind man. We all loved working with him. Frank was working with our Audiovisual Department on a video version of his tour. The video is in the final stages of editing and, when completed, a copy will be presented to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in Frank's honor. He will be missed.

Though Frank and I worked toward mutual goals for years, I feel that our work had only just begun. He was always so generous with his time, and passionate in his presentation. The impact of his influence is staggering. I'm lucky to count him among my mentors and will carry the work on in his name. Frank brightened my life and inspired me so much! Hugs to the Henrys and the extended Taliesin family. Let's do right by his legacy!

Frank was a dear friend of mine. Our common bond was Architecture. I enjoyed hearing his stories about the history of Architecture in Arizona. I am sorry that Frank's dream to become an Architect was never realized. I began mentoring him for the Architect's exam a few years ago. May God's Eternal love surround you as you rest in peace. My condolences to Frank's family and friends.
