Lorna and I wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of Frank Hornby. I was deeply saddend by the news and as I told my sons (Andrew & Ian)about Frank, they remembered him not only as an umpire for many of their Little League games but of a person who was fair and respected. My daughter Sheena who was brought along to many LL games remembers Frank's multi coloured car. We will all miss Frank, from the umpires, from the District #3 volunteers and from the Little League baseball family.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Frank's passing. A very longtime friend, it was my privilege to witness some of Frank's highlights as he progressed through his coaching and then umpiring career.
My heart and thoughts go out to Frank's family. Please accept our deepest condolences and sympathies. He will be missed.

My deepest condolences to the Hornby family.
Over the years I have had several opportunities to work games with him. Although a man of few words, he made the most of what he had to say. He always brought the best out of whoever he was working with and the simple insights he offered had great impacts. I feel proud to have worked with him.
Frank was a great umpire and a great man. He will be missed.

My Condolences to the Hornby family. Frank was on my crew for the first provincial championship that I ever umpired in. I always had a blast any time I was on the field with him, and I can remember many times talking baseball with him at a ball diamond. I'll miss you Frank

It was quite a shock for me to open my email 2 days ago and see an obituary for a friend and colleague named Frank Hornby. I was just telling my wife Judy I was going to call him to come up to Centennial to work under him as a Umpire in Senior and Junior Little league as I don't have the time needed to fullfill the duties required by CABUA. It was an honor to work beside him on the ball diamond as well as get CABUA started just a few short years ago. Judy and I are going to miss you Frank, and I may see you on the diamond in the afterlife. Our condolences go out to Jan and her family, and sadly we will be unable to attend the service Jan.02 2007.

I am writing this message from Vancouver. I was stunned when I received James's message of Frank's paaaing. I have not known Frank for a long time like others, but I will miss him dearly, Frank was great on the field, had a terrific sense of humor off the field, and Frank was also one of the greatest team players CAGUA has ever had. As assignor, I could always count on
Frank to take an assignment, All I had to do was ask, and his reply was always " I'll be there!"
I will not be back in Calcary to participate in honoring Framk on Jan 2, but I would likw to let Janice, James and all of Frank's famiily know that my thoughts will be with you.

I was shocked to hear of Frank's passing. I had just returned last night from spending Christmas with my Dad in Baltimore, Maryland. I extend my prayers and deepest sympathies to the Hornby family. I grieve with them for the loss of one so dear to them and a fellow umpire and friend on the baseball diamonds of Calgary and area.

I was devastated to hear of Franks passing. He was not only a mentor, but a great friend. He could always keep me from getting down after a bad game and keep me from getting way too cocky after a good game. One of Franks truly great gifts was that even as an umpire, he was liked by fans, coaches and players. Now at the end of a game I will look over my shoulder to see if Frank will show up for a quick beer and talk about umpiring. Baseball in Calgary will never be the same for me. I will miss him.

I was truly devastated to hear of Franks passing. He was not just a mentor but a great friend. Frank could not only bring me back up after a bad game, but also keep me from getting to cocky after a good game. What I found really amassing was how well liked Frank was by players and coaches. For me, baseball will never be quite the same in Calgary. Now at the end of a game I will probably look over my shoulder to see If Frank came to join us for a quick one and remember that he is no longer with us. From the Gagne family, to all the Hornby family we extend our condolences. I will miss you Frank.

This is way too soon to be saying goodbye to a great guy!
Frank was always there to lend a hand and help out however he could.
He was a straight shooter that you always could depend upon.
Best of all, he knew how to have fun on a diamond and how to make new umpires comfortable and get them ready to take on tougher assignments.
The DeLude family will always remember the great times we had with Frank at so many ballgames and fondly recall when Frank and Jan attended Jennifer and Christopher’s wedding 3 short years ago.
To all the Hornby family members our deepest condolences and sympathies, we will all miss Frank’s cheerful disposition and constant encouragement.

To the Hornby Family:
Take comfort in knowing your husband, son, father, brother and grandfather touched the lives of many people and certainly left a lasting legacy in the baseball umpire community. Whenever I saw Frank's name next to mine on our game assignment schedule, I knew I would have a great day on the diamond. I learned so much from Frank and his understanding of the 'game within the game' and will greatly miss him as an umpire partner and friend. We were all very proud of Frank as a founder of CABUA, our first 'Umpire of the Year' and his recent induction into the Alberta Umpire Hall of Fame.

It was always a pleasure to meet Frank at the ball-park. Genuine friendship is hard to find and I always felt at ease with Frank. Life can be unfair but sudden death seems more so, especialy for all of us left behind. Frank will remain a pleasant memory.

Frank -- Thanks for imparting your knowledge and love of the game on me. I knew you only a few short years, yet in those years I came to know a man who loved being on the field and helping his partners. You have left us much too soon.

Frank. I am so glad that I have some pictures of us, up in the stands during one of the baseball tournaments. You and I were analyzing all of the umpire's calls that game. Even though the years have passed I still have many many fond memories of those baseball years. Rest well Frank.

I shared my brother's love of sports, and I have many fond memories from our childhood. My favorite was from 1975 during a Crescent Heights High School wrestling tournament. Frank was a referee, and I was wrestling for the tournament championship in my weight class. I came in second for the tournament, but first in my brother's heart. While we were walking home together, he told me he couldn't concentrate on the match he was refereeing because he was so interested in watching my match. I will alwyas remember how proud he was of me that day.
