Its been ten years since your passing as I read thru all the condolences. Frank Stencil is one of my best memories from John Dewey and CV. "He was Real". Thanks for everything you did for us.

Stence you are without a doubt one of the nicest guys I had the pleasure of meeting. I know I was a cocky kid (CV Class of 85) when we shared time, but it was later in life when I realized who you were and what you were about. You were ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR THE KIDS whether it be in the training room, the class room, or out in the real world....YOU WERE ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR US and for that I can't thank you enough!!!! R.I.P. my friend and God Bless!!!

Stence you'll be missed. The man is a ledgend. I remember him throwing tennis balls at kids in class. I hated going to class but his class was great. I got to know him real well my last 3 years of high school with my bad knee. Maby someday when I pass on he'll be standing there with another ice pack for me. He was by far my favorite teacher.

Please accept my deepest sympathy, Cassie and Hank. Frank was a very good friend while he and Rose lived in Erie. I thought a lot of them both. I have good memories of them both. God bless you and your family. Truly, Betty Rowand.

I never had class with Stence. No gym, health, or even a study hall. I was a student athlete and would like to share two quick stories. First, I almost bit my tongue off in a high school soccer game. He spent the entire game handing me and ice cubes wrapped in cloth from the sidelines. I probably drank 3 gallons of water in the form of ice cubes that day. After the game he walked over while I was talking to parents and told my Dad, "take Kersh to the hospital." I then replied "I'm ok" and he looked at my Dad and again said "take Kersh to the hospital, it could effect his speech." We went to the hospital and I got (8) stitches in my tongue. Stence called my home at 10:30pm that night to check on me. I guess he found my number in the phone book. I would have seen him the next day at school.
Second story. Senior year I sprained my ankle. He told me to meet him in the training room as soon as I got off the bus for treatment. While we were talking in the trainign room that morning, he asked what teacher I had for first period. I told him my teacher and he told me he'd be back in ten minutes. He returned and I was now late for class. This particular teacher had a strict policy for being on time and in your seat when the bell rang. Stence walks into class with me and like Tony Soprano tells the teacher, "Kersh was with me". I sat down and looked out the long window in the classroom door and Stence is in the hallway giggling like a (5) year old. He took me back to class late every day that week. He laughed in the hallway each day. His goal was to help me stay on the field, but to stroke that teacher just amused him to know end. Ankle healed and I didn't miss a game.
Later that year, CV held what I think was called a "powder-puff" game where the high school girls played flag football on a Friday night in the stadium. In tribute for everything he had done, I asked Stence if I could be him for the night. I stood on the sideline and wore his circa 1972 red Colts jacket, blue Colts trucker hat and I think he even let me wear his boots. I would stop over his house to say hello when I was in college. For anyone who never entered his home in Mt. Lebanon, he had an office where the walls were covered with photo's and articles of the best teams and the best athletes Chartiers Valley had ever produced. He had my senior picture on his wall. He cared about his student athletes more than people will ever know or would give him credit for.

I knew Stence as a trainer in high school. His off-color remarks kept everyone on their toes and made the high school sports years much more memorable. He was scary as hell, but if you got injured, you came to realize that he cared very deeply about the well being of every student athlete. He is a true legend... may the Lord bless and keep him.

My condolences to the Stencil family. Mr. Stencil was my grade school gym teacher and the athletic trainer during my four years of football (79-83). He helped me through a torn cartilage injury as a sophomore and patched up other small injuries as well over those years (and helped my younger brother, Ron, too). I have stories that I tell to this day with Mr. Stencil as the main character. The world is missing a very kind and caring man.

My condolences to the Stencil Family. I knew Frank for many years. First as the Athletic Trainer at CV, then as peer when I taught but most importantly as a friend. Over the years I ran into Frank at the Giant Eagle. If I didn't see him first he would bellow all over the store " Sweeney do they really let people like you in here". He always made me feel special and took great care of me when I was injured. I had the honor to take care of Frank at Lifecare Hospital where I'm a Respiratory Therapist. I hope that I gave Frank the love and Care he deserved. Just as he did over the years to the many students he came in contact with. You will be missed Stenc! Many thanks to the Stencil Family for sharing your father with all of us.

Stence was an all around great guy hiding behind a gruff exterior but always there with a joke and a smile. After a knee injury my senior year he sent me to Doc McMillan and I ended up on the Grove City football team so I have four varsity letters, an engineering degree, my wife and a 30-yr Air Force career to thank him for. Looking forward to seeing you on the other side my friend. Merch, CV '76

Stenc - you were not only my 1st Grade Gym Teacher and then High School Trainer, but more importantly you are without a doubt one of the most unique characters in the history of Chartiers Valley. You are truly a legend and my thoughts and prayers go out to your Family. You will be missed by everyone who had the good fortune of having the privilege of knowing you.
Sincerely,

I think back on the good O'l days at John Dewey in the late sixties and Frank Stencil is the first Teacher I think of. He was always there for the kids, someone we could call our friend. I can still see him in his "office" in the locker room having a cup of coffee and a donut. It was a cool place to hang out. He taught us much and was one of the "Good Guys". Thanks Mr Stencil !

One of the most amazing people ever - from elementary school gym teacher to high school trainer to taking care of me when I played in college and finally teaching with him after I graduated. I remember going to his house so he could treat an injury and having him call me at home to check on me. He remembered everyone, too. So many funny one liners - I still quote him all the time. RIP Stence - we've lost a truly great person

Stence was never the most poetic or the most soft spoken... in fact, he was quite rough around the edges. That said, he was ALWAYS the gym teacher or the trainer that everyone remembered as the guy who cared the most, made you laugh the hardest and is always talked about even today. RIP Stence, you will be missed.

Such a good guy! Deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Stence was my gym teacher in elementary school and taught us well. So well, that I am now using his teaching methods to teach my son to encourage his athletic ability. He will be missed dearly by so many.

Frank was one of the most memorable gym teachers anyone could have. Several years ago, I saw him at Fort Cherry Golf Course where he worked as a starter. I wanted to hit the best drive I could hit to make him proud, but, instead dribbled it off the tee. In his deep, coach voice, he said "you're standing too close to the ball, Burnsie.... I mean after you hit it". I still use that line today. Thanks for all the great memories, Frank. Dave Burne, Class of '69

Most sincere condolences to your family. I worked as a trainer for Frank at CVHS for 4 years and he taught me a great deal about athletic training and life. I owe a great deal to him. I had not seen him in a few years, but I thought about him often. He was a great trainer, a fantastic person, and a role model. He will be missed.

Mr. Stencil was my trainer in football all four years I played at CV from 9th to 12th and was the best I could even visit him when home from college and go to his house for that extra therapy from injuries at college playing ball his door was ALWAYS open to his highschool athletes he was so proud to take care of......he never stopped taking care of us even after we graduated "STENCE" will be sadly missed but never forgotten.....#55 Cheapshot as he dubbed me,today is sad day.........

Mr. Stencil helped me be the athlete that I was. I had an injury that most coaches would not let me play with and Mr. Stencil drove me to Pitt and conferred with other trainers and guarenteed my coaches he could wrap my arm so as not to have it injured. He was 100% right-on. Not to mention he had one of the biggest hearts of any person I knew. . . .Catch!
