Fred Joyner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 6, 2025.
Scottsdale - Frederick "Fred" William Joyner passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, at the age of 88. Born in Long Beach, California, Fred spent his early years in Yuma, Arizona where he attended Yuma Union High School, graduating in 1955. He then attended the University of Arizona in Tucson as a proud member of Alpha Tau Omega. He graduated from the engineering program in 1960, launching a career in Civil Engineering that spanned more than 45 years.

Fred spent most of his adult life in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he was known for his professional dedication, strong values, and deep sense of community. He was the devoted husband of Joyce Ann Joyner, his high school sweetheart. They shared 67 wonderful years of marriage, raising two children, Stephen Douglas Joyner and Stacey Denise Lieber, and later welcoming two beloved granddaughters, Brin Jaylianna Lieber and Joyce Edith Lieber.

A lifelong member of Optimist International, Fred served with distinction, including a term as President of the Phoenix Chapter. He was deeply committed to his community and his faith, actively involved in the Episcopal Church from his youth in Yuma to decades of leadership in Scottsdale. Fred's dedication to young people shone through his service in church youth groups, Boy Scouts, youth soccer, and as a Little League coach. He also shared his love of the outdoors with the Quest Club Hiking Group, where he led many hikes across Arizona's scenic trails.

In their retirement years, Fred and Joyce traveled extensively, exploring destinations across the United States, Europe, and Asia-often accompanied by their daughter Stacey and granddaughter Brin. These journeys were a source of great joy and adventure, reflecting Fred's enduring curiosity and love of shared experiences.

Fred highly valued his connections with family and friends and consistently made efforts to stay in touch with loved ones near and far. His warmth, dependability, and sincere interest in others left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Yesterday

I was so sad to hear about the passing of our dear family friend, Fred Joyner. My family´s connection with Fred goes all the way back to his high school days in Yuma with my dad, and through the years we always made an effort to see each other-whether it was during visits to Scottsdale or when the Joyners came to San Diego.

Fred was one of the kindest people you could ever meet. He always had a smile on his face and a way of making everyone feel welcome. We had so many fun times together-cheering at University of Arizona basketball games, soaking up the sun at the beach in La Jolla, and sharing plenty of laughs whenever our paths crossed. Growing up knowing Fred and his family was such a blessing, and I´m grateful for every one of those memories.

Fred will be missed so much. His warmth, his kindness, and that ever-present smile will always be remembered. Sending all my love to the Joyner family-my heart is with you during this time.
