Fred Meyer

February 20, 1936 - August 3, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Fred Meyer to prostate cancer. He was the loving life partner, friend and companion for 25 years of Michelle Mageau, the inspiring father of Eva (Lester) and Nils (Joanne), the cherished Grosspapi of Mattias, Kirstin, Andreas and Erik all of the Ottawa/Wakefield region. He was the beloved uncle of Urs (Amparo, in Florida, USA), Barbara (Pesche) and Karin (Ghrigi) as well as the dear brother of Pia, Ruth and Kurt (Mirka), the latter all in Switzerland. Many nieces and nephews as well as extended family members and friends will remember Fred fondly.

Fred loved life, adventure, science, sports and learning. A retired electronic engineer of Nortel, he mastered two apprenticeships in Switzerland before obtaining his equivalency in engineering in Canada while working full time and building his family home, a dome, in the Gatineau Hills of Wakefield.

Fred participated in and actively supported individual as well as community-based sports such as Nakkertok, the Alpine Club of Canada, the Ottawa Section of the Alpine Club, the Ottawa-based Bushwackers club of explorers and paddlers as well as the La Ferme cycling, skiing, hiking and paddling club. He participated in countless backcountry telemarking, cross-country, skating, downhill skiing, snowshoeing and hiking adventures across the country. He kayaked and paddled in white water or sea and packed in countless trips up passes and peaks in Canada, USA and Switzerland on foot, bicycle, motorcycle or skis. He cycled all year round and swam every day. Kind and mindful, Fred supported many charities and cultural endeavours.

A private cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 10h00 in the Wakefield Community Centre Great Hall. Please donate to the charity of your choice.

My condolences. I have fond memories of working with Fred at BNR many years ago. I will also never forget a canoe trip with Fred, where I felt the need to drag my canoe paddle so as to avoid leaving the rest of the canoe party far far behind.
