Freda Black Obituary
Born in Alamance County on November 11, 1960, Ms. Black was the daughter of James Fred Bowman, who survives and the late Dr. Betty Lynch Bowman.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Zebulon L. Bowman.
In addition to her father, Ms. Black is survived by her daughters Jordan Leigh Black of Bradenton, Florida and Jeanette Bowman Black of Wilmington, North Carolina; brother Dr. Tom Bowman and his wife, Dr. Karolen Bowman of North Wilkesboro and sister Nan Bowman Wooten and her husband Steve Wooten, of Guilford County; nephews Dr. John Daniel Bowman, Dr. David Neil Bowman, Paul Thomas Bowman, Daniel Jefferson Bowman, Michael Jameson Bowman and Joshua Steven Wooten; and nieces Kathren Bowman Lundy, Maria Dee Wooten and Elizabeth Kaye Wooten.
Ms. Black graduated from Cummings High School in 1978. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wake Forest University in 1982 and her law degree from Campbell University School of Law in 1985.
She began her career in 1985 as a Public Defender in Robeson County. She later moved on to Durham County as Assistant District Attorney where her practice was concentrated in prosecuting criminal cases. She continued her career in private law practice in Durham County.
In addition to her passion for practicing law, Ms. Black was a talented musician and shared her talents as organist, pianist, soloist, and church choir member in many churches throughout her life.
For the past 8 years she has served as pianist for Beverly Hills United Church of Christ in Burlington, where she and much of her family have been members for many years.
A funeral service will be held Monday, August 6, 2018 at 2 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, 508 W. Davis St., Burlington, NC.
Officiating will be Dr. Ron Shive and Rev. Phil Bowers. The family will receive friends in the church boardroom at 1 p.m. preceding the service. Burial will follow the service in Magnolia Cemetery in Elon, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Music Memorial Fund of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, 508 W. Davis St. Burlington, NC 27215.

Träffade dig aldrig Freda, tyvärr, önska ja hade gjort det, hade behövt en så starkt person som dig, ända sen ja såg Staircase I was amazed by you...that's why I tried to write to you...without respond...I did not know you had passed away and I was so sad..more than sad. And I can't get how mutch I wich you were alive and how mutch my heart pains by you're tradgic end, when I never met you. As our next door neighbor in Raleigh, we experienced our first taste of Southern Hospitality from Freda. Memories of her laughter, her generosity, her love of the sun, and thoughtful advice on southern culture remain bright.

I cherish my memories of talking, laughing and just getting to spend time with this beautiful, dedicated and highly intellectual lady. We were neighbors when she lived in Lumberton, NC, and we spent several Saturday nights watching movies and ordering take out food! (She loved Dirty Dancing and she would say that she should have played the part Jennifer Grey was blessed to have in the movie!) I loved and admired her laugh and her wit! Freda was always so much fun to be around! She encouraged me in so many ways and I was blessed to have her as a neighbor and friend! Although the news of her death was heartbreaking, I'm glad she is at peace. I know without a doubt that our Heavenly Father welcomed dear Freda into her home of beautiful, and eternal rest. Until we meet again, Freda....❤

My heart is broken. Freda was my best friend and roommate while we attended Wake Forest University. I feel so blessed to have shared those years so closely with the kindest, smartest, funniest, and most caring person I have ever known. Our friendship was so special. Not a day passed that she didn't make me laugh and brighten every situation. Freda was loved by everyone. Hardly a person on campus did not know her. She was so fun to be with that everyone was immediately attracted to her. There was no one she wouldn't befriend. We were all so lucky to have had her in our lives.
Freda was studious and focused. Law school was her goal and she never took her eye off the prize. To be represented by Freda was to have the best and brightest.
Through the years, Freda never lost her ability to love deeply. Her daughters were so precious to her. Her love for them was immeasurable. Most of our conversations revolved around their lives and the joy and pride she took in everything they did. I pray their wonderful memories with their mom will get them through this difficult time.
My condolences go out to her whole family. She loved them all so deeply.
I will forever miss the beautiful person I was lucky enough to have shared my life with. May she forever live on in our hearts.

Freda will Always have a place in our heart. She was such a strong person always thinking of others. Jenny and Jordan I remember the FUN days when you girls were in 2nd grade with your mom being so caring for less fortunate friends and providing DAILY snacks for them. What a "SPECIAL MOM". Freda will never leave us as we cherish such wonderful memories of a devoted, caring, and loving person.
