Garth Evans Obituary
Age 67, of Navarre, passed away on Tuesday, Apr. 20, 2010. He was born in Canton on Sept. 21, 1942 to the late Albert and Marjorie Evans. Garth earned his undergraduate degree from Malone College and his Master's Degree in Education from Youngstown State University. He was employed as a teacher, basketball and football coach with Minerva Local Schools, retiring in 1999, following 33 years of employment. He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, the Canton Lincoln Alumni Association and the Stark County Senior Golf League. Garth was inducted into the Stark County Amateur Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. He enjoyed golfing, boating, spending time with his family and attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. Garth was an avid supporter of local athletics and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara Evans, whom he married in 1967; three children, Garth Eric (Stacey) Evans of Perry Twp., Melissa (Michael) Knop of Canton, and Kevin (Emily) Evans of Fletcher, Ohio; grandchildren, Tyler Kirker, Marissa, Madelyn, Makenna and Melaina Knop, Austin Jackson and Zachary Cox; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Richard and Jean Van Almen of Canton and brother-in-law, Darryl (Gail) Mowry of Canton.
Funeral services will be Friday at 12 p.m. in Otterbein United Methodist Church, 6025 Shepler Church Rd. SW Navarre, OH 44662, with the Rev. Debra Speer officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, from 6-9 p.m. and two hours prior to the service from 10am-12 p.m. on Friday in the church. Garth's children graduated from and were very active in Perry athletics. Honoring that tradition, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made, in his name, to Perry Local Schools Athletic Department, 4201 13th St. SW Massillon, OH 44646. To the Evans Family,
Mr. Garth Evans was my accounting teacher in high school at Minerva, Class of 1993. As someone mentioned here, he was intimidating at first. That changed once you gave him some time and got to know him. He was a great teacher. If you ever had a question about something, you could always go to him to ask. He constantly talked about his wife and family during class. I still remember that after all this time. I am thankful for the opportunity to have been taught by this man. Thinking of your whole family in thoughts and prayers at this time.

Mr evans was my goverment teacher my senior year 93 at first I was terrified because of the older kids saying he was a tuff nut to crack well he turned out to be a teacher that still to this day I have not forgotten he was a wonderful teacher he was attentive and helped when you needed it he was a great teacher at Minerva for many years my heart goes out to the family in this time of need know that he left a lasting impression on every student he had Lisa Plott class of 93 go lions

I had Mr. Evans for Government Class in my Senior year. He caught me chewing gum in his class and I had a 250 word report due on "Dental Hygeine" the following day. He was an amazing man & teacher! I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Evans. I was his football secretary all though high school. He was such a great person and teacher. I'm very sorry to hear of Garth's passing. I began my teaching career in Minerva with him in 1992. He was a wonderful teacher and true motivator to his students. My condolences to your family. Garth gave me the opportunity to be his student teacher back in 1989 at Minerva and I am forever indebted to him for that.
