Gary Bargell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 24, 2022.
Gary Kent Bargell, 83, of North Platte, passed away on April 20, 2022, at his home. He was born on Sept. 11, 1938, to Joseph (Maczka) and Doris (Young) Bargell in North Platte. Gary graduated from North Platte High School with the class of 1956 and went on to obtain a bachelor of fine arts degree from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, in 1964. While at Bethany, he was mentored by John Bashor, a renowned Midwestern painter and print-maker. Gary was a devoted student of the arts, completing graduate classes at multiple universities and ultimately obtaining a master's degree from Kearney State College in 1970. Gary married Pauline Leech in 1961 in North Platte. He started his long teaching career at Kearney State College in the art department and also taught at York High School. The couple moved back to North Platte in 1967 where Gary was a beloved art teacher at North Platte High School until he retired in 1998. For several years, he also taught art at Mid-Plains Community College. Through the years he influenced countless students, sparking an interest in the arts while sharing his life's wisdom. Gary had a wry sense of humor and was a very content person who believed in living within one's means and appreciating life's simple pleasures. His interests were many and varied, including golf, baseball, hunting, fishing, shooting trap and skeet, nature and of course creating art from whatever medium he discovered. Gary was a founding member of the Lure Traders, a local group of lifelong friends and fishermen, and a long-time member of the Lincoln County Wildlife Gun Club. Gary was an avid collector of fishing lures, duck decoys and anything that seemed worth saving. He loved helping kids be successful and was always a sound source of advice. He was greatly loved as a father, a grandfather, a teacher and a friend, and his unique perspective will be deeply missed. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Doris. Survivors include three children, Jon Bargell of North Platte, Dana (Cindy) Bargell of Dillon, Colorado, and Spring Branch, Texas, and Jennifer (Randy) Porter of Centennial, Colorado; ex-wife, Pauline Aden of North Platte; grandchildren, Cassidy Lane Bargell of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Delani Kate Bargell of Dillon, Hannah Jo (Chris) Medved of Sheridan, Wyoming, Hayden Young (Kelsey) Porter of Weatherford, Texas, Maddison Claire (fiancé, Brandon Wells) Porter of Flagstaff, Arizona, Nolan Bargell Porter of Austin, Texas, and Sadie Rose Porter of Centennial; great-grandchildren, Porter and McKinley; siblings, Dave (Deniece) Bargell of North Platte and Frank (Karen) Bargell of Sterling, Colorado; and numerous other family members, friends and past students. Memorials are suggested to Prairie Arts Center or Lincoln County Wildlife Gun Club. Online condolences may be shared at adamsswanson.com. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Patrick Sipes officiating. Inurnment will follow at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens. The service will be livestreamed via the Adams & Swanson Facebook page for those unable to attend. Visitation is from noon to 7 p.m., with family present 5-7 p.m., Monday, April 25, at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Uncle Gary was so positive and had such a great sense of humor. We will never forget the trip he took up to Alaska to visit us. We had such a great time. He's the only person we know that can hold a 100 lb halibut with his pinky finger!! We were glad we were able to visit with him last fall and see his Art Collection. We love you and will miss you Uncle Gary. Enjoy the hunting, fishing, and painting up in heaven!

Gary & his family were long time friends. My late husband - Bruce Hoye - shared not only teaching the same subjects, but numerous other activities to many to mention. However, the Gun Club was significant for that group.
It goes, without saying, Art & all that entails provided beauty, not only from their creative talents, but also everyday life. Rest in peace, my friend.

Gary was a spectacular person. While he conveyed his passions, others felt they could possibly do it. If you created something, he would talk about it. The creative process was his schtick, his sense of humour was wicked, and the world was an oyster. Just shuck it!

A great influence on my career choice, Mr Bargell was my HS art teacher and then later supervised me as a student teacher for a full semester. He was so talented and his wry sense of humor never failed to make me laugh. His life mattered to me, I will never forget him.

Mr. Bargell was my high school art teacher 50 years ago and an influence in my life. I was recently turning a wood bowl on my lathe. It was about as large as my lathe would handle and I thought, "Mr. Bargell would say, 'If you can't be good, be big.'" Thanks Mr. Bargell.
