Gary Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2023.
Gary Michael Davis, 71, of Carrollton, TX, passed away on June 24, 2023. Born on April 18, 1952, in Melrose Park, Illinois, Gary was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend. He was a gentle giant who touched the lives of many with his kind heart and generous spirit.

Gary had a passion for electronics, computer programming, music, and cats. He was always eager to lend a helping hand to friends and family, and he found joy in learning and tackling unanswered questions.

In his professional life, Gary dedicated 45 years as a z/OS mainframe systems operator. He was highly skilled in Information Technology and programming. He was regarded as a wonderful teacher and mentor to co-workers, as well a great team player. His expertise and dedication made a significant impact in his field, and he will be remembered for his contributions.

Outside of work, Gary found solace and enjoyment in classical music as well as building and repairing mechanical and electronic devices of all kinds. These were hobbies that brought him joy and satisfaction throughout his life.

Gary will be dearly missed by his surviving sister, Merikay V. Garrett, his nephew Phillip A. Davis, his nieces Katren E. Garrett, Deborah K. Kissinger, Karen E. Spears, Jennifer L. Davis, and his nine great-nieces and -nephews, as well as many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice V. Davis, his father, Duane H. Davis, his brother, Duane R. Davis, and his nephew, Evan C. Garrett.

A small private service will be held later this summer, where Gary will be laid to rest in the family plot at Mt. Salem Cemetery in Mahtowa, Minnesota.

Gary's gentle nature, love for his hobbies, and dedication to his career will be cherished by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, curiosity, and compassion. May his soul find eternal peace.

Big sister here...We were best buddies. Gary was bright, smiling, a happy place for the little me and a lifelong caring, supportive friend/brother.

As I look at my relationship with Gary, I realize how much I will/already miss him. I only knew him for 2.5 years, but it seemed like longer - yet not near long enough. He always knew how to put a smile on my face. We worked an install together during the pandemic and we spent hours "together" before ever meeting each other face to face. He was an outstanding Systems Programmer. He was a witty, fun, intelligent, patient, and a well-versed on many subjects. He was a gentleman. I more than enjoyed working with him and wish I had additional opportunities to gain more of his wisdom and get to know him better. I looked forward to seeing his online messages and it always touched me when he´d ask about my mom, because it was obvious that he really cared. I think about him often and am comforted to know our paths will cross again.

Gary was truly a very kind and helpful person. I worked with him on a couple of projects during his time working at Texas Instruments. He was always willing to help and shares his knowledge. He will be missed.

Gary was my co-worker over these last 27 years across 4 different companies with 7 employers (one company buys, another company merges, relocates ...) but most of all Gary became my good friend.
And that was not unique with Gary. For those that got to know him he was a quiet hard working person who kept mostly to himself. He was always willing to help in any situation. His work nature was "helpful and knowledgeable" to put it mildly.
He was a great worker individually but also among any project or team member he worked with. A perfect team player all the time.
We often encounter impatient even angry customers who just "want the computer to work" in this type of business environment.
It took a lot to rattle Gary to even think a harsh word ... never mind actually voice any displeasure about any task, event, or person.
So many programming projects together. So many challenges. So many long nights and weekends.

Gary had a great work ethic and an amazing quiet sense of humor.
One Saturday night (2002) during a long trouble shooting session (in those days you drove into the office for every major problem) after we had returned the production systems back over to the customer ...
... we were all exhausted and waiting to be released to return home ... Gary smiles at the group of us and says - "You know we are all like cell phones" We looked at each other, our cell phones, and though Huh?
"Nights and Weekends are FREE".
We all grimaced. Gary just continued to smile. I´m going to miss you my friend.
