Gary Forsythe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 3, 2023.
Dr. Gary Edward Forsythe, 71, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on October 30, 2023. He was born on October 21, 1952, in Peoria, Illinois. Dr. Forsythe, also known as "Gary," was a beloved professor and scholar, whose passion for ancient history, particularly Classical Greece, was unparalleled.

Despite facing challenges in his life, including being blind since the age of 12 and having over 80% hearing loss, Gary's determination and love for learning never wavered. He dedicated his career to educating others, teaching at prestigious institutions such as the University of Chicago, Strathmore, Bren Mar, and Texas Tech University, where he served as a tenured professor. His expertise and knowledge were recognized when he was invited to assist in special projects at the Institute for Advansed Studies at Princeton and Penn State.

In addition to his academic achievements, Gary was a prolific author, having written over 9 books on ancient history. His contributions to the field will continue to inspire future generations of scholars.

Gary had two great loves in his life. His first was his wife, Dorthy. Dorthy was his companion for over 20 years until her passing on March 8, 2003. His second love was teaching and sharing his passion for ancient history with his students. He leaves behind a legacy of knowledge, and his impact on his students' lives will be remembered fondly.

Garys was proceeded in death by his beloved wife Dorthy and Step Son Scott Pathel. Gary is survived by his stepdaughters, Susan O'Holleran and Carolyn Gould. He was particularly close to his two eldest granddaughters, Charissa O'Holleran and Jennifer Bushman, who held a special place in his heart. He also leaves behind five more grandchildren: Caitlin Blanchard, Nikita Harrod, Eugene Huffman, Briana O'Holleran, Savannah Bell and his great grandson Phillip Huffman along with two great granchildren who he loved very much.

In memory of Dr. Gary Forsythe, the family kindly requests that flowers be sent to his house for a small family service. The ceremony will be a private gathering to honor his life and celebrate his contributions to the field of ancient history.

Gary's dedication, resilience, and passion for knowledge will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the academic community. May his memory live on in the hearts and minds of all those he touched throughout his remarkable life.
