Gary Grant Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 3, 2024.
Beloved son, husband, father, and coach passed away in a car accident on Friday, March 15, 2024, at 38 years old.

Gary leaves behind his grieving mother, Kareen Grant, who will forever hold dear the memories of her only child, a constant source of pride and joy. His wife, Megan, and their cherished sons, L.J. (9) and Anderson (7) will deeply feel his loss.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Gary's passion for swimming blossomed there. He was one of New Jersey's most decorated high school athletes and a former standout swimmer for The Ohio State University. A Bergen Catholic High School graduate, Gary was a powerhouse in the pool, earning All-American honors and leading his team to the school's first-ever tournament final. He was a three-time First Team All-State selection, setting and still holding two Bergen Catholic records. Gary's dominance extended beyond high school, claiming five state titles and being named "Swimmer of the Decade" in New Jersey. In 2003, his senior year, he received national recognition as Speedo and the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America's Swimmer of the Year. Throughout his competitive career, Gary amassed an impressive collection of victories, including six YMCA national titles (one in the 50 free, which set a national record) and wins against some of the biggest names in swimming.

Gary's passion for swimming translated into successful coaching. He served as an assistant coach for both the Upper Arlington boys and girls swim teams and the Upper Arlington Swim Club, inspiring and mentoring young swimmers. Beyond his coaching, Gary was a role model for countless aspiring swimmers.

Gary's infectious laugh, bright smile, and unwavering spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He will be remembered as a humble but fierce competitor, a dedicated coach, and a loving human being.

A special service will be held at Bergen Catholic High School on Sunday, April 7th, from 1 to 3 p.m. ET. We invite those who were honored to have known him or heard of his legacy to partake and share memories and condolences.

Donations can be made to Bergen Catholic High School in Gary's memory instead of flowers. These donations will be used to establish a recurring scholarship for an underrepresented swimmer needing financial assistance to follow their dreams. Given Gary's beloved dedication, commitment, and recognition in Bergen Catholic's Hall of Fame, his memory will live on forever by helping others follow in his footsteps.

I can´t say what is my very first memory of Gary as we met when we were just 7 and 8 years old, but I have vivid memories of us goofing around in the seating area at the Hackensack Y. Gary and I swam together at the Y and then at Wave and he was always very special to me. He was so smiley and goofy and he made swimming, which can be quite boring at times, so fun. I recently reread the last message exchange we had, which was somehow over 15 years ago, and I was struck by how sincere and kind he was. We may have been separated by time and distance but there is an unwavering bond shared by those of us who started swimming together so young. Gary is so missed already, and I send my deepest condolences to his mother, wife, and two beautiful boys.
