Gary Jackson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 16, 2024.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Gary Jackson, 77. Gary was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and partner; and an accomplished and passionate scientist, inventor, and author.

Gary Jackson was born on June 5, 1947 in Herrin, IL to Rev. Manuel Jackson and Linnie (Purdie) Jackson. He spent his early life exploring the rivers and wilderness of southern Illinois, Kentucky, and Indiana. After becoming sick, Gary's childhood became marked by a series of illnesses that kept him painfully bedridden for long periods of time. Driven by an insatiable curiosity, Gary continued to explore the world through his books and school tutors, sparking a lifelong passion for learning and knowledge and was especially fond of reading about space, technology, and the human mind. He went on to earn a PhD in psychology and embarked on an accomplished career as a behavioral analyst. Gary loved to solve complex problems. He held 5 patents for his inventions, and served the U.S. government for decades, working on critical national security and cybersecurity projects. After spending much of his young life stuck in bed, Gary spent his adult life defiantly in motion, often working and writing long into the night.

Though Gary truly loved his work, he also maintained a strong connection to the natural world and the water. He taught himself to sail and especially loved sailing his family around the Chesapeake Bay for many years when he resided in Annapolis, MD. Gary also loved music and inherited his mother's ability to play piano by ear. Gary had a unique approach to life and will certainly be remembered by many for his determination and drive, ingenuity, passion, generosity, and humor.

Gary Jackson is survived by his daughters, Kary Pierson (and her husband, Daniel) and Ashley Henley (and her husband, Jason); grandchildren Kayla and Jared, and Gus and Lucy; beloved siblings, sister Reita Caringer and brother Kevin Jackson (and his wife, Sheri Jackson); step-daughter Ginger Dussault; and partner Pei Li. Gary was preceded in death by his mother and father, Linnie Mae Jackson and Rev. Manuel Jackson; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Caringer.

A private memorial service to celebrate Gary Jackson's life will be held in Illinois.

I just learned of the passing of Gary. We worked together and published research at the Lincoln Development Center in the early 70's. Always a kind, gentle and caring professional. As fate has it we were able to meet up in Gallatin two years ago over a great Chicago Italian Beef. Was hoping to do that again in the near future when I was sadly informed. My prayers to all his loved ones.

Gary was my brother and closest friend of 70 years. We fought, laughed, and cried together. We were the best men at each other's weddings. He was always there when called. He was a great influence on many of my lifes decisions. He loved when the family got together. Silly jokes and laughter, never arguments.
I miss Gary with a broken heart, but find comfort knowing I will see him again.

Gary and I worked together for a few years. I admired his passion for his work and his wonderful sense of humor. Rest in peace, my friend.

I first met Gary in 1982 when I was employed as his secretary when he worked at the University of South Florida.
As my supervisor, he always treated me with respect and kindness, always encouraged me and provided positive reinforcement in our daily interactions.
We worked closely but also became friends. A friendship that lasted 42 years.
We always stayed in touch through calls, cards and texts throughout the years.
Gary always spoke of his love of family and he was like family to me.
Gary had a great sense of humor and often made me laugh even at difficult times in my life. He had a kind and generous heart and I knew I could call or text him at any time and he would find just the right words to make me feel good.
Gary and I often spoke of our faith in God and always ended our texts and calls with the words "Don´t forget to pray".
Gary FaceTimed me several days prior to his passing, he was in the Rehab, and yet he still made me smile under those circumstances. I feel so blessed we shared that call on that day.
I will miss him but he is always in my heart and in my thoughts.
My heartfelt sympathy goes to Pei Li, whom he shared his life with for 10 years, and to his daughters, grandchildren, sister and brother and family.
Gary was a very special part of my life.
May you find peace and comfort in all the beautiful memories Gary left behind.
