Jonesboro- Gene Sterling Clayton, 74, passed away Friday, January 11, 2013 at his home. He was born March 12, 1938 in Manila to the late Ed Clayton and Rosie Gleghorn Clayton. Gene was retired from Riceland Foods and attended Wood Street Assembly of God. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening when he wasn't watching the weather channel from his recliner. Gene was very proud and spoke often of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gene is survived by his wife of 57 yrs, Joyce Clayton; a son and his wife, Dr. Jeff Clayton and Nancy Sue of Jonesboro; two daughters and their husbands, Sandra and David Gambill of Jonesboro and Barbara and Jim Jenkins of Germantown, TN; a brother, William Clayton of Williford; five grandchildren, Jesse Jenkins (Michelle) of Germantown, Jade Bryan (Danny) of Baton Rouge, LA, Dr. Jason Gambill (Jessica) of Denver, CO, Justin Gambill (Trista) of Liberty, MO and Taylor Gambill of Jonesboro; six great-grandsons, Ephraim, Shepherd, and Drake Gambill, JJ and Max Jenkins and Parker Bryan. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bessie Head and Marie Olner. A celebration of his life will be at 1:00 pm, Monday, January 14, 2013 at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home with Rev. Cass Ledbetter officiating. Burial will be at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery. Family will receive friends Sunday from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at the funeral home at 300 W. Matthews Ave. in Jonesboro. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Joe Borden, Glen McManners, Dr. Jason Gambill, Justin Gambill, Taylor Gambill, Jesse Jenkins, Danny Bryan and James McDaniel and as honorary pallbearers, Jade Bryan, Jessica Gambill, Trista Gambill, Michelle Jenkins, Brian Clem, Steve Williams and his six great-grandchildren and the maintenance employees of Riceland Foods. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Hillcrest Children's Home, 2325 Malvern Ave., Hot Springs, AR 71901 or Wood Street Assembly of God Building Fund, 1925 Wood St., Jonesboro, AR 72401.
