Ok Uncle Gene, here goes my note. You were my dad's half brother. There was nothing half about you. You ere my Uncle and like a brother to my oldest sibling, Charles. That made you more like a son to my mother, Leavie. Although she could not have ask for better brother after my dad died. You and Aunt Lou were the best support for her. I always looked forward to our phone calls. I have letter that you wrot to my brother when you were in high school. Signed Sock In Wash, what was that. Ok miss you always. Yes you always said you had lot of questions for God so I am sure are busy.

I have known Gene and his family since we were neighbors living in Moline Acres. A great father, family man and neighbor. Heaven is richer with his entrance.

I was lucky to be a neighbor of Mr. Novell's. As a young boy, he taught me about rocks and minerals, their properties, and gave me examples to start my own rock collection. I still smile remembering when he told me what dinosaur dung was! As I grew older, he taught me how to change the oil and filter in my first car. A skill I still use today. He was a special person who was loved by my family and will be missed. To Linda, Tracy and the rest of his family, please accept my deepest sympathy and warm regards.

I feel so lucky that I knew Gene as a little girl. I knew him as Granddaddy. He was the most sweet, interesting man to me. When I think about him I always remember how he could wiggle his ears like magic and how he taught me about rocks. He had the coolest ones. You will truly be missed Granddaddy! I love you!

I am very blessed to have known Mr. Novell since I was a little girl. My parents, Ken and Laura May White, and Mr. and Mrs. Novell were dear friends for decades, sharing dinner with 4 other couples every second Saturday of each month for so many years in their beloved Supper Club. I don't even know how this group began; I just know they all were like family. I remember as a young girl how Mr. Novell would lovingly tease me when Supper Club was at our house (I was the dish washer). He was so kind and he made me laugh, and since he was a math teacher, I knew he was one intelligent guy! And Mrs. Novell was always so sweet and caring to me. Such a fine couple.

Even though they were separated by many miles these past many years, my Dad and Mr. Novell kept in touch over the phone regularly until my dad's passing in April. Dad would always let me know when they'd talked. It was clear how much they both treasured their friendship.

My husband and I are better people for having known this sweet couple. We look forward to a delightful reunion in Heaven one day.

Gene, Louise, Bobby and Freckles went to Colorado in 1967. Mary and I drove along with them pulling our tent-top camper. The first night we stayed in Cedar Bluff State Park. The adults stayed inside the camper. Bobby and Freckles slept outside in a sleeping bag. It was very windy at the park. We all laughed and talked and stayed up late. The next morning we had breakfast together. Driving on up into the mountains was a wonderful experience, never to be forgotten.

Our family was blessed to have such an amazing man in our lives. He was such a great husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his family. I wish we had recorded all of his stories or had him write a book. He had so many stories from his experiences in life and was a lucky man to have lived life to the fullest. I had him record The Night Before Christmas on a recordable book a couple years ago as I thought it would be a great treasure to have my Granddaddy telling us that Christmas story. It will be bittersweet this year when I pull that book out. I am lucky to live in Colorado and be able to see Pikes Peak and be reminded of my Grandfather and his experiences with the AdAMan Club. I am so grateful that I get to have that view every day and be able to be reminded of him. I am so glad he was able to come out one last time this summer and see us and see my children again. You will be missed. We love you. Losing a loved one is never easy but I am glad you are finally at peace.

What can I say that hasn't already been said? My father was beloved by family, friends, and his students. He played a subtlety different role in all of their lives.
I worked at the University of Missouri, St. Louis in the early 1970's. There was a sign on my door that read "Bob Novell." I could not hazard a guess as to the number of times there was a knock on the door and it would be a student who would ask "Are you related to the Mr. Novell that taught at such-and-such school?" I would reply that I was his son. They would tell me how great a teacher he was and how they learned so much from him.
That happened so often that I got to the point where I don't consider myself Mr. Novell, but only Bob Novell. To this day I tell people that Mr. Novell is/was my father.

This is very hard to write Daddy as I could write a book about you. I miss our daily phone calls and you always telling me to call if I ever needed anything. I learned so much from you including but not limited to how important it is to treat everyone the same, the love of reading and math, and how to keep on going no matter what. You and Mother were there for me during my darkest times, always with words of encouragement. I have so many memories which have come back to me since you left us, I am lucky in that way. I have laughed at some and cried at others. Your stories will always be around being told by someone you knew. Oh, what stories you could tell.
After Mother left us I remember how you kept telling others that no man could have had a better wife. I know how lonely you were but you kept on going. When my grandson, Carson was born you and Linda came out and the pictures I have of you holding him when he was two weeks old are a treasure to me. He saw a picture of you when he was three and thought you did not have any hair. Remember the name he gave you? GiGi PaPa No Hair You really enjoyed it. Thanks for all the love you gave me, Jennifer and the great grandchildren, Carson and Hadley. At the service someone gave Carson a little bag with some cars in it. He went up to the casket and said the needed to show his cars to you. Bob picked him up and he showed each car to you. I know you would have enjoyed that. See you later Daddy

We lived next to Mr. Novell for a few years. He treated my daughter, Cheyenne, like his own granddaughter. We always felt welcome in his home, and he would never let us leave empty-handed. Books, jewelry, rocks (of course) and anything he believed we would enjoy or learn from. He wanted to share his curiosity and thirst for knowledge! He shared riveting stories and wonderful memories. He was the most interesting man I have ever met. We were very fond of Louise too for the time we knew her before she passed. She was a kind, wonderful person too.
Mr. Novell came to a few of our yearly family fish fries. He always called to thank us for inviting him even when he couldn't attend.
We looked out for him, especially after he lost Louise, and was injured so badly cutting down a tree one year. We worried about him and tried to stay in contact the best we could, though busy lives often make that difficult. I found out through Linda telling my husband that Mr. Novell was looking out for us!
I had divorced, and it was just Cheyenne and meuntil I married Bud. Mr. Novell told Linda that he didn't have to worry, and that we would be taken care of because he knew Bud was a good man. The three of us would go visit Mr. Novell and Bud enjoyed those visits just as we always had.
Gene Novell was a joy to know and will be dearly missed. Our condolences and prayers to all who knew and loved him.

My Granddaddy was an amazing man. He knew everything about everything! One of the many things about him that always fascinated me was how he could wiggle his ears! Thanks Granddaddy for all the fun adventures!

During my career as a police officer I was involved in many scary situations. But, I have never been as scared as I was when I had to ask Gene Novell if I could marry his granddaughter. He was truly a great man and will be missed.

My granddaddy w
as an influential part of
my entire life. He taught me the idea of fairness. He was never judgemental. He always gave people the benefit of the doubt. He once told me the story of his time working for the railroad in Louisiana. He was the foreman and the time keeper. Black emplyees were not paid overtime and were not afforded mattresses to sleep on. Turning in payroll for his men was a big part of his job as you can imagine. My granddaddy fought for the rights of his black employees and insisted they receive overtime and mattresses. He won. That is the kind of man he was. He was an amazing rile model and the most amazing friend Ive ever known. The way he bonded with my sons was a true gift. Grandaddy you are my hero in so many ways. I will forever miss you.

What a lucky girl I've been to be able to call you My Dad. You have been there for me all my life. Good times and bad . I've learned so much from you, some I wasn't interested in, but you passed it on anyway(making of the atomic bomb for example). As I sit in your chair and look out the front door I see 3 humming birds chasing each other. There are 3 feeders for them as you know but they continue to chase each other off . Thank you for everything Dad, I have been blessed to be your daughter and to have been raised in a Christian home. I love you and will miss seeing you, but you will always be in my heart. Love, Linda

I will always remember Uncle Gene for the joy he brought to life.. He gave my first roller skates on Christmas Day. We went immediately down to the basement (UG & Dad)) to teach me to skate. Since the coal was stored there when we came up I was black all over. Boy, did my mother have a fit. He was simply an amazing man interested in everything. Such questions he will have for God.
