George Alex Obituary

Published by PL-Doings on May 19, 2022.
George Charles Alex of Burr Ridge, age 94. U.S. Army Veteran-Korea. Beloved husband of the late Helen (nee Papazickos); loving father of Dr. Charles (Mary) Alex, Anne (Theodore) Theophilos and William (Chrisie) Alex; proud grandfather of Nicholas Alex; Dean (Leigh-Ann), Jamie and George Theophilos and Helen, George and Peter Alex; great-grandfather of Theo Theophilos; dear brother of the late Evangeline (late Gus) Pappas and the late Alexander (Maria) Alex; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. George grew up in a loving family in Clarksburg, West Virginia. During his youth he worked at his family's restaurant, The Manhattan. A person of immense curiosity about all manner of things, he was drawn to math and science. He attended West Virginia University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering with honors and distinction. Upon graduation he was recruited by the then preeminent international industrial giant, The General Electric Company. Following two years of active military service in the United States Army during the Korean War, he returned to the General Electric Company and remained there for his entire 40 year career. Through talent, hard work and determination he rose from trainee to a senior management role in the sales of complex industrial equipment. After college he courted the love of his life Helen to whom George was entirely devoted. The young couple lived in Schenectady, New York where they had the first two of their three children, Charles and Anne. They moved to Cleveland, Ohio in the late 1950s where their third child was born, William. In 1971 George, Helen and their three children moved to Hinsdale, Illinois. George was an avid skier, fisherman and an enthusiastic bridge partner with his wife of 60 years, Helen. He was a highly experienced traveler who loved the American West and Alaska. In addition to his family, George was committed to the Greek Orthodox Church. He was a past President of Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church in Westchester, Illinois and was on the parish council for 45 years. George emanated authentic joy and peace. He touched countless lives with a firm handshake and a warm smile. He was a mentor to many and a veritable endless reservoir of giving to others. We do not see his like often. It is a blessing that at his funeral we were all able to sing the triumphant hymn "Christ is Risen" and be comforted with the knowledge that George has joined his beloved Helen with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Funeral services were held on Monday, May 16, 2022 at Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church.Interment Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church, 2501 S. Wolf Rd., Westchester, IL 60154. Arrangements entrusted to Chris J. Balodimas, Funeral Director. My condolences to the family, a great accomplished man and ambassador of Christian love and righteous integrity-always bringing a warmth, positive attitude and a word of encouragement to all. A privilege to know and be blessed with his presence for many years at Holy Apostles Church. He and his wife will always live in my, and many other´s hearts. Memory eternal.

George was one of the first Holy Apostles parishioners we met when we moved to Illinois in 1989. Such a welcoming man with his warm smile and his firm handshake. George was truly a devout Christian who gave tirelessly, for decades, of his time and talent to the Church, without hesitation or question. A true PILLAR of the Church and the Holy Apostles community. He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and working with him. MAY HIS MEMORY BE ETERNAL!! With love in Christ, Maria and Straty Stoumbelis Ladson, SC.
