George Buchanan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 8 to Apr. 9, 2023.
George Buchanan Gainesville - The family of George Buchanan Jr. MD are deeply saddened to share the news of his passing on March 24th, 2023.

George was born in Anniston, Alabama on February 10,1954 to George Buchanan Sr. and Louise Buchanan.

He attended the University of Alabama as an undergraduate. He then went on to earn his medical degree at Meharry Medical College. He went on to residency in OB/GYN at Hurley Medical Center in Detroit, MI.

Post residency Dr. Buchanan moved to Gainesville in the mid-1980s where he established partnership with Bradford Williams MD in a private practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He also affiliated with both the Gainesville Women's Health Center and the Birth Center of Gainesville. He deeply understood the reasons women make complex decisions about their reproductive choices. He understood women know best what they can and cannot do. He also understood why women want to be in as much control as they can safely be while birthing. He unconditionally respected those choices.

George was respected in all quarters of his life. He was a compassionate physician and a respected skilled surgeon. Dr. George Buchanan Jr. Day was named for him on June 30th 2019 by then Gainesville Mayor Lauren Poe. This honor recognized the scope of Dr Buchanan's philosophy of medical care. No one was turned away who could not pay. Access to care and freedom of choice in reproductive matters were important to Dr Buchanan.

George loved the gym. He was as buff, handsome, and smart as a man could be. If you needed to find him, you paged him. Or ran over to Golds Gym. He might show up to pages from colleagues in a tuxedo or work boots and a tool belt. But mostly everyone saw him in his daily uniform of a blue scrub suit.

Large format flower photography was his artistic pleasure. In local art shows his work was applauded. It was simply so beautiful.

Dr. Buchanan is survived by his adored wife, Felor Buchanan and their two beloved children, Jewell and Iraj a well as his step children Mojdeh and Lily. He will be especially remembered by his siblings Hazel Brooks, Antionette Buchanan, Debora Denise Buchanan, Jesse Bernard Buchanan, Tony Foster, Tonie Buchanan Grayson as well as his long time friend Clovis Watson Jr.

In lieu of flowers, an educational trust fund is being established for Dr Buchanan's children. Donations are welcome. Email [email protected] for particulars.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10AM on Saturday, April 15, 2023 in Westside Baptist Church, 10000 W Newberry Rd, Gainesville, FL 32606
