George Hohl Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 20, 2017.

Following a three week struggle with an aggressive form of melanoma, George E. Hohl, age 82, died January 17, 2017 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Towson, MD, surrounded by his loving family. George was born in Harrisburg, PA on February 24, 1934, the son of George Oscar Hohl and Hazel Mae Morrow Hohl. During WWII the family moved to the Baltimore area where his father worked for the Glen L. Martin Company decoding German rocketry codes. George graduated from Kenwood High School in 1951 and the State Teachers College at Towson with a BS in Elementary Education in 1955. After teaching for one year at Villa Cresta Elementary, George was drafted into the US Army where he served as a Combat Engineer at Fort Leonard Wood in Rolla, MO. George then returned to teaching at Villa Cresta as he completed work on his Master's of Education in Educational Administration from the University of Maryland. He completed additional graduate work at Johns Hopkins University, Loyola College, and McDaniel College. George later obtained his Doctorate in Education through the National Educational Leaders Program at Nova University. George served in Baltimore County Schools for over 40 years. He was the Assistant Principal at Battle Grove Elementary, and then served as Principal at Chapel Hill Elementary, Shady Spring Elementary, Pine Grove Elementary, and Carroll Manor Elementary. George then served as the Science Supervisor for Baltimore County Schools before becoming Principal at Deer Park Middle and Magnet School. After "retiring," George worked for the State Department of Education, serving as a mentor for teachers in Baltimore City Schools. He subsequently returned to Baltimore County Schools and served for 15 years as an Acting Principal in a variety of schools for principals who were on long-term leave. He was active in numerous professional organizations, including the Association of Elementary School Administrators of Baltimore County (AESA), the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals (MAESP), and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. George was also highly involved with Towson University, where he served as the President of the Alumni Association for 3 years, and where he proposed, helped design and implemented the Teacher Education Center. He was also active at the University of Maryland, where he served on the Chancellor's Advisory Council for 10 years. In addition to all of his work in education, George was a man of strong faith. He was a highly involved member of Towson Presbyterian Church, where he led and served on countless committees, as well as serving as a Deacon, a Trustee, and as a member of the Session. George was a busy man, but he always had time for his family that he loved. George and Anne were married for 59 years and had five children, 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren: David (Annie), and children Stuart (Hilary) and Rachel; Bruce (Dawn) and children Selina (Chris and children Seraphina, Harlan and Everett), Maura and Brenna; Kevin (Adriana) and children Ryan, Kelly, Justin and Sidney; Rob; and Lisa (Scott) and children Kara and David. George was extremely proud of all his family, and it meant a great deal to him that they were all by his side throughout his final battle. Visitation with the family will be held at Towson Presbyterian Church, 400 W. Chesapeake Ave., Towson MD 21204, from 6pm-9pm on Friday, January 20. A celebration of George's life will be held at Towson Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 21 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, please honor George with a gift to Towson Presbyterian Church or to the Hohl Scholarship in the School of Education at Towson University.

Dear Anne and Family,
Please know you're in our thoughts and prayers. George was one of a kind! We're so happy we got to visit during our mother's 85th birthday party in February, 2015. You and George made it to Lebanon on that snowy day! We treasure all the family memories.
With Our Deepest Sympathy,

I remember Dr. Hohl from Chapel Hill Elementary when I attended there in the 60's. He must have made quite an impression on me since I never forget his face. It's the first time in my life that I ever thought that someone had eyes in the back of their head. He always caught me doing something inappropriate and even made me stand facing a bulletin board in the front office. I remember that to this day! Lesson learned! Regardless, he was a good man and I am so sorry for your loss. I will see him again someday in heaven and truly wish I knew him as an adult. Blessings and Prayers to you and your family.

George was a man of words....kind, caring, and without missing a beat! He helped me in my time of need when I was first searching to find myself in the World Of Public School Administration. He stepped in to help mentor and guide me through the rough times in PS Administration.

George, you will be truly missed by family and colleagues. May I see you again some day in Heaven!

George always was kind, thoughtful and forward thinking. It was such a pleasure to work with him in Baltimore County and throughout our tenure on the Alumni Board of Directors at Towson University. George shall be missed immensely upon this earth, but his incredible spirit shall live on in each of us who had the joy of knowing him.

My deepest sympathy to the family of George Hohl. He was a wonderful person, principal, and mentor. When I was a new high school principal in the BCPS, he was supportive and kind, always giving me good advice tempered by his droll sense of humor.
