GEORGE NEILSON

NEILSON, George Of North Andover, died on February 28, 2023, at the age of 98. Born in Boston in 1924, the only child of George A. and Martha Pauly Neilson, he grew up in Needham, MA. After serving in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II, he received bachelor's and master's degrees from Boston University, married Grace Hansen in 1947, and began his career at Newton High School as a teacher and administrator. In 1960 he became the General Manager of Rockywold-Deephaven, a family resort on Squam Lake in Holderness, NH. He then returned to education as the CFO of Phillips Academy (Andover), retiring to Naples, FL in 1986. Wherever he lived, George was a leader in numerous civic, church, and professional organizations. In retirement, he remained active as a volunteer, preparing income tax returns for seniors, building houses for Habitat for Humanity, and serving as a tour guide for the Naples Botanical Garden. He also enjoyed time with his family and friends, skiing, hiking, birding, golfing, playing Bridge, and boating. Most especially, he loved exploring and traveling with Grace, his loving wife and playmate for over sixty-eight years. George leaves two daughters, Jan Eschauzier and husband Peter and Jody Morse and husband Garlan, all of Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
