George Nellist, a loving father, respected veteran, and valued member of the Honolulu community, passed away on July 19, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on December 19, 1944, in the wonderful city of
Honolulu, Hawaii. His deep love for the island was evident in everything he did, and it was there, amidst the familiar beauty of his hometown, that he took his last breath after a courageous battle with prostate cancer and dementia.
George's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to service. He honorably served in the Marines, a testament to his strong sense of duty and patriotism. He completed his Bachelor of Art in Sociology and a Master Degree in Social Work at the University of Hawaii. His commitment to helping others continued as he became a social worker, providing support and guidance to those in need. George's diverse career also saw him in roles as a mover for JCPenny, a prison guard at Halawa Prison, and a Captain of the fire department, where his leadership and bravery were an inspiration to many. He retired from the fire department after 20 years of service.
Not one to settle into inactivity, George continued to serve his community after retirement. He worked for the Army civilian police at Fort Derussy and later as a TSA agent at the Honolulu Airport.
George's zest for life was as vast as the ocean he so loved. He was often seen swimming at Kaimana Beach, walking and running in Hawaii Kai, and around Diamond Head, frequently accompanied by his beloved daughter, April Nellist. His passion for health and vitality extended to weightlifting, a hobby that kept him strong in body and spirit.
A man of many talents, George was known for his culinary skills, particularly his ono fried rice, which brought joy to many family gatherings. His simple pleasures included visits to Costco, trips to Las Vegas, working on his car, and tending to his backyard.
George's intelligence shone not only through his professional endeavors but also through his love for reading, which kept his mind sharp and his wit quick.
He was a man who could light up a room with his humor and who never hesitated to share his generous spirit with friends and family.
Beyond his professional and personal pursuits, George had a brush with fame as an extra on the iconic television shows Magnum PI and Hawaii 5-0, adding a touch of Hollywood to his diverse life experiences.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Cassandra Land; his mother, Alice Mooklar; sister, Nani Hulse; and brother, Russell Hulse. George leaves behind his devoted daughter, April Nellist, and his nephews, John and Jeff Hulse, who will continue to honor his legacy by living out the values he instilled in them. He was also survived by great friends Sid Nakahara and Mike Keitzer, who often visited him at his care home. In the last years of his life, he was cared for at Pleasant Valley Home, by wonderful Joan Flores and her family, who were with him in the end.
George Nellist's life was a journey of dedication, joy, and genuine love for those around him. His memory will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to George, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of wisdom, and an abundance of generosity.
