George still brings a smile yo my face.
When he used to say he graduated from the U. of MN. and walk two blocks to his lifelong job, I told him most of us graduated from Marshall H.S. and walked two blocks to the U. Of MN.
After high school that I thought I was the only geometry student who didn't have to do pushups and sit ups in the hall. Even Missy Miller had to.

George was my best friend who I met in High school and constant companion for many years. He was my partner in our handbalancing act. He was an exceptional person and athlete and has influenced many areas of my life forever. One could never have a better and truer friend than George, may he rest in peace.

I was class of '81, and George was my swim coach at Marshall-U for two years. He was a wonderful coach in his ability to teach everyone how to improve and to be encourage the sheer joy of sport and exertion. I was far from a great swimmer, and had never done competitive sports before, and he encouraged all of us, slow 'mullets' and AAU hotshots alike, to push our limits, to learn the difference between exertion and injury, to work through the 'wall' and realize we were still going. He prowled the pool deck at Edison in his shorts and anklet socks, and we teased him that he was vain about his legs. Though I never had him as a teacher, the same gentle manner, dry sense of humor, and integrity that he showed as a coach were a steadying presence in the school, as well. He was one of the good guys. I celebrate his life and extend my condolences to his family.

What nice memories your students have offered! You seem to have impacted many children over your lifetime as a teacher. Your family will surely miss you! Trish Mahre (daughter of your niece Jackie Moran in Colorado)...

I'll miss my 10th grade geometry teacher who I saw frequently over the last 45 odd years as a IRS information officer and at various functions for school. Great guy to talk to.
Now both our Georges are gone, but probably together somewhere.

So very sorry for your loss. Please know that you are lifted up in prayer. Mr. Patten was my Math teacher at Marshall-U in the 70's. I will always remember the day I approached him to sign my autograph book at the end of the year. He said "Don't you have a yearbook?" I said "No, just my autograph book." He signed the autograph book, but then he signed a yearbook (He's on page 18)and gave the yearbook to me. The book is such a treasure and the generosity he showed is a testament to his loving, spirit-filled life. We were blessed to have him at our school. I was delighted to read that he has been tutoring the past eight years. He did what he loved - and it showed! (Formerly Wendy Olstead)

I had Mr. Patten for Algebra back in the early '70s. His instruction was nothing short of phenomenal. He taught a full class of students one at a time. Yes, one at a time. We all worked at our own pace and got individualized instruction from Mr. Patten. He understood back then that the one size fits all approach to teaching doesn't work, and crafted an individualized approach for each student to succeed at their own pace. In addition, he used multiple ways to explain any concept so that each student understood the material based on their learning style. Really quite phenomenal. Marshall U had an incredible math department back then, and I learned a great deal from Mr. Patten. We need more teachers like Mr. Patten and he will be missed.

He was my sister's swim coach and my algebra teacher. We both liked and respected him. Please accept our sympathies.

I am so sorry for the family's loss. I really appreciated George when I was at Marshall. Even in the years after he was my teacher he was a friend and supporter. I'm sure you have precious memories of him.
