George T. Sfeir 1935 - 2018
A Generous and Caring Man of God
UTICA - George T. Sfeir, 82, passed away January 19, 2018, at the Presbyterian Home.
George was born on June 9, 1935, in Utica, the son of Tofik and Tamar (Ghosn) Sfeir. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Utica College. George was a Research Assistant at the Masonic Medical Research Lab in Utica for over 30 years.
George was a generous man whose family was most important to him. He had a special place in his heart for his God and his church. George donated his time and efforts to St. Louis Gonzaga Church, the Holy Name Society and St. Joseph Society. He was immensely honored when St. Louis Gonzaga named their special gathering place in the church after him. George felt strongly about education, was happy to spend time in his garden and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
He is survived by his beloved sister, Amelia Karam, Utica; sister-in-law, Jacquie Sfeir, Ohio; aunts, Laure, Altimar and Clotide, Lebanon, and Rose, Brazil; nieces and nephews, Mary Karam McKey (John), California, Joseph Karam (Marianne), New Jersey, John Tofik Karam (Josephine), Illinois, Adam Sfeir, Ohio, Elizabeth Damianov (William), Michigan, and Matthew Sfeir (Lydia), Colorado, along with great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. George was predeceased by his brother, Captain John D. Sfeir.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Karboski & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd., Utica. The Prayer of Incense will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. from St. Louis Gonzaga Church, where the Divine Liturgy of the Departed will be celebrated. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Remembrances in George's name may be made to St. Louis Gonzaga Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
George's family would like to thank Dr. Butala and Dr. Wassel, the 6th floor St. Luke's "Angels" and the Presbyterian Home Rehab for all the care and compassion shown to George during his illness. A special thanks to Chor Bishop John Faris for his spiritual guidance and friendship for so many years.

We met George for the first time at our granddaughter's birthday party in June of 2007. We enjoyed our regular late spring chats about many garden-related topics. With the birth of our grandson in 2009, we began a yearly cycle of spring and summer birthday-related visits with George. His knowledge of gardening was impressive and it seemed he was always trying out something new and would generously share the details of his latest project. Perhaps even more noteworthy were his kind, gentle, and welcoming demeanor, and his delightful sense of humor. We also looked forward to his homemade, fresh mozzarella on the buffet table! We send prayers to the family at this sad time.
