Dr. George Sylvester Starrett

Dr. George Sylvester Starrett Passed away peacefully on November 6, 2008 at the age of 83. He was a resident of Foster City for 37 years. Dr. Starrett was born on March 8, 1925 in Larned, KS and moved with his parents to San Diego, CA at age two. Following his service with the U.S Army during World War II, George attended San Diego State University, Stanford University, and U.C.L.A. After a number of years as a high school and university instructor, he joined the California Teachers' Association staff and served 34 years in varied positions, some of which included Executive Secretary, Los Angeles Teachers' Association and Executive Secretary, California Higher Education Association. He also organized the Los Angeles College Teachers' Association and became its first executive director. In addition to his extensive career, George received great pleasure in helping clients with income tax preparation. In his leisure time, he enjoyed genealogy, traveling the world with Jackie, watching his grandchildren play sports, as well as watching his favorite college and professional football, basketball, and baseball teams. George had been a member of several organizations which included Burlingame Masonic Lodge #400, Burlingame Scottish Rite, Asiya Shriners, Commandry #1, and San Mateo Elks #1112. George is survived by Jackie Starrett, his loving and devoted wife of 59 years; daughter Sandy (Steve) Hawley-Odessky; and sons Randy (Diane) and Scott Starrett. He was a loving grandfather to Courtney and Colby (Jenna) Hawley, Ryan and Michael Starrett, and Aaron and Steven Starrett. A celebration of Dr. Starrett's life will be held for his family and friends on Friday, Nov. 14th at 2:00 p.m. at the Colonial Chapel of Crosby-N. Gray & Co. Funeral Home, 2 Park Road, Burlingame, CA. Interment to take place at a later date in San Diego, CA.
