George Supplee Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 2, 2014.
George William "Bill" Supplee CAMDEN - George William "Bill" Supplee died peacefully on Thursday, October 30, in Camden, SC, at the age of ninety. Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joyce Tucker Supplee of Camden, SC, children Tucker (Carrie) Supplee of Muskegon, MI, Bonnie (Steve Garrett) Supplee of Atlanta, GA and Donny (Sharon) Supplee of Camden, SC, 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Supplee Jongewaard of Wesley, IA, Jean Supplee Crider of State College, PA, and a brother, Robert Lamberton Supplee of Orange City, IA. Mr. Supplee was born on July 9, 1924, in Assam, India, to George Washington Supplee and Ruth Lamberton Supplee. He graduated from Woodstock High School in India, Wheaton College and American Conservatory in Chicago, IL, with degrees in music. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a musician and machine gunner. He married Joyce in 1949 and after moving to Columbia, SC, was director of music and led the Ambassador Choir at Columbia Bible College (now Columbia International University) for 40 years. Referring to his career, Bill said, "My passion is for people to worship the Lord in their own verbal and musical language. Jesus spoke the language of the people." Bill enjoyed cycling and after retiring from teaching became an active community volunteer and an avid gardener. A member of the Mid Carolina Camelia Society, his blooms won many awards. He and Joyce volunteered for many years with international students at University of South Carolina and instilled Christ's love for the whole world in their children, each of whom is now involved in some form of international ministry. A talented musician, he often played the piano at Kershaw Health Karesh Wing and other ministries in Camden until a few days before his death. A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 PM, November 4, at Shortess Chapel, Columbia International University, 7435 Monticello Road, Columbia, SC 29203. Dr. George Murray and Mr. Robertson McQuilkin will officiate at the service. All are welcomed to attend and celebrate Bill's life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Columbia International University. The family wishes to thank the excellent staff at Karesh Wing for the loving care of their parents.

Mrs. Supplee and family- what wonderful memories I have of Mr. Supplee- always encouraging even for those of us who could not sing in the choir! He even tried to teach me to play the piano back in 1964! I had a Bible Club and used a recording from CEF to teach my children how to sing- Mr. Supplee so rejoiced in that. I also remember his passion to see music in different cultures and languages while I was serving among the Dayaks a tribal group in Kalimantan, Indonesia. My life was enriched by knowing him and also his beloved wife. My prayers are with you from me and others here at World Team who also went to CIU.

Mr Supplee gave me confidence, a shy missionary kid from India. I loved being in the Ambassador Choir under his leadership. To this day, I still love singing "The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation" and "A Mighty Fortress Is My God."

Bill Supplee was instrumental in Elouise Renich and I beginning our long journey together (now married 49 years). He was one of the most positive persons I have ever known: fun, always punning and joking, smiling, laughing but always also focused on Jesus Christ as his life. I was in the Ambassador Choir for four years as a student. Later when I was a fellow faculty member with him, I was able to help out by directing the Ambassador Choir for a semester so he could take a sabbatical researching issues in ethnomusicology. So well prepared was the Choir that I only had to wave my hands and beautiful music came out! I had taken a term of choir conducting as an undergrad student (some 10 years earlier) and it worked. What I loved about Bill was his single-mindedness and humility. He was gentle with us all and never broke a "bruised reed" nor quenched a "smoking flax" (Mat 12:20)." Like his Savior, he was infused with love. Like Timothy (from Time, Grk. worth, honor), he was filled with a servant's heart, caring more for the interests of others than his own interests. His legacy will live on in the many lives of students and colleagues, such as myself, who have known and loved him. "For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain."

There aren't enough words and there isn't enough space here for me to express the magnitude of what Mr. Supplee meant to me and to the world around him. He was my next door neighbor and as a little girl I dreamed of getting married in his exquisite back yard. That did not happen, but I still love camellias and azaleas, and a beautiful, fully bloomed camellia can instantly take me back to my childhood home. You couldn't be near the Supplee's without knowing their love for Christ, their love for people, and their love for music. I believe that my sister and I have both pursued music partly due to the Supplees' influence.

Mr. Supplee always had time to talk to a little girl, a preteen, a young woman finding her way. I never felt like I was bothering him. I'm thankful that God put my family in that neighborhood so that I could know and be taught by such a Godly man.
