Visit the Legacy Remembers website to view the full obituary.
George T. Vlahos, 85, of Erie, went home to be with our Lord on Monday, January 2, 2017, at Saint Vincent Health Center. He was born on May 28, 1931, in Erie, a son of the late Thomas M. and Julia Turowski Vlahos.

George started college later in life and worked a 40-hour week while attending classes. He was the first male to take courses at Mercyhurst College and was a graduate of Gannon College.

He was a Math, Physics and Chemistry teacher in the Erie School District for 22 years, retiring in 1984. In addition to teaching, George was a tax preparer, which, upon his retirement, evolved into a successful family business – Vlahos Accounting, Inc.

He was a member of the Nuova Aurora Club and the Retired Teachers Association and a life member of the Erie Maennerchor Club. He was also a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister.

He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and had the memorabilia to show it. He was so proud of the Cubs winning the World Series. If it wasn't the Yankees, then it had to be the Cubs!

He loved his family, especially his wife Columbia, and would still get a sparkle in his eye every time he saw her. There is no greater love than theirs.

He took great pride in his children's and grandchildren's achievements. If you talked to him, you could see him shine when he spoke about his wife and family.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Dominic Pagliari; his sisters, Joni Colonna and Lucille Hutzler; and brother, Michael Vlahos.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Columbia Fargiorgio DiPlacido Vlahos of Erie; three daughters, Deborah Pagliari, RNFA (Raymond), Corinne Dyakon, RPh (William), and Darlene Vlahos, Esq., all of Erie; and one son, Patrick Vlahos, D.O. of Pittsburgh, Pa.; sister-in-law, Maria Vlahos of Peabody, Mass.; and 14 grandchildren, Michelle Maslanka, Nicholas Pagliari, Brian Vlahos, Stephen Pagliari, Jennifer Vlahos, Erin Bosley, Anthony Pagliari, William Dyakon, Jr., Christopher Dyakon, Sarah Peebles, Karren Vlahos, Rebecca Vlahos, Katelynn Vlahos, and Hannah Vlahos. He is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Additional calling hours will be held on Friday at Saint Mary's at Asbury Ridge, 4855 West Ridge Road, from 9 to 10 a.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1626 West 26th Street, at 11 a.m. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.

To continue George's legacy, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Barber Foundation, 100 Barber Place, Erie, PA 16507, or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Erie, 1645 West 8th St., Erie, PA 16505.

George's family would like to thank Saint Mary's at Asbury Ridge, Saint Vincent Health Center 4th Floor, their Dialysis Team, Rev. Dennis Martin, and DaVita for their wonderful care.

Dear Vlahos Family~
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. May God be with all of you at this difficult time in your life. What a great man George was. I will always be forever grateful for both his and Columbia's kind and encouraging words to me after many of my losses. I too went to college to become a teacher a little later while also working. During many visits to Dorothy's house or her family's special events, George and Columbia always made a point of asking how school was going for me. Thank you George and Columbia for all of your special prayers. It's people like you that make the world a better place.

Corinne, Bill and boys,
Please accept our sympathy on the loss of your father and grandfather. It was apparent that he took great pride in all of your accomplishments and truly loved his family dearly. Always the teacher, I remember Billy and Chris counting the coins from his pockets when he was visiting. He certainly will live on through your memories of cherished times spent with him. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Our sincere sympathies to Columbia and all of the Vlahos family. We were so sad to hear of the loss of one of the greatest men in Erie. Everytime I walked into his office, the first thing he asked me was "how is Mary?" (my wife). He was instrumental in building my business. I will never forget that he prepared a three-year projection for the bank loan and charged me nothing. George understood people and what they needed to make their dreams come true. A teacher to the end, he taught me to be a businessman with a heart. He will be missed.
