George White Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 27, 2006.
WHITE George H. White, Jr. died at his home on August 28, 2005, the day before Hurricane Katrina devasted New Orleans. He was 78 years old. A life long resident of New Orleans, he married Patricia J. White in 1955 and together they had two children, Dionne and George III. He was a veteran of World War II and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 36 years. He had a strong belief in education, so while supporting his family and raising his children he obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of New Orleans. He then went on to achieve a Master's degree in Political Science. He was an avid student of history and politics and after retiring from the Postal Service went on to teach both subjects at Southern University in New Orleans. He loved teaching and always sought to inspire his students. What always gave him great joy was to in turn receive the admiration and respect of those students. Another large part of his life was the St. Louis Cathedral where he and his wife were parishioners for 40 years. He was a member of the St. Louis Cathedral Parish Council for eight years and was awarded a medal from the New Orleans Archdioceses Order of St. Louis for his service to the Church. The things he enjoyed most were vacationing with his family, fishing the bayous and lakes of Louisiana and spending Sunday afternoons at a New Orleans Saints game. In June 2005, he and his wife, Patricia celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at a celebration given to them by their children in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is survived by his wife, Patricia J. White, two children Dionne and George III, three grandchildren, Christina, George IV and Nicholas and a daughter-in-law, Stacie L. White. He is the son of the late George H. White, Sr. and Gertrude Coste White. He is also survived by a brother, Melvin J. White. Mr. White was interred at a private burial officiated by Monsignor Kern and Deacon Ronald Guidry of the St. Louis Cathedral at Lake Lawn Metairie Cemeteries. A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, August 28, 2006 at 12:00 noon at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Las Vegas, Nevada.
