George Zorn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 27, 2016.
George G. Zorn, Jr., M.D. November 26, 1922 - March 9, 2016 El Cajon George G. Zorn, Jr. was born to George G. Zorn, Sr. and Mary Ellen Kearns on November 26, 1922 in Springfield, Illinois. The family moved to Chicago where George, in fourth grade, lived next to and later married the love of his life, Rita Leahy. George attended Loyola University, Chicago then Loyola Stricht School of Medicine, finishing his medical training in the U.S. Navy. Dr. and Mrs. Zorn were first stationed in Long Beach, which included two tours of duty on the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge. Dr. Zorn served 11 years in the Navy, retiring with the rank of Commander. In 1956, Dr. Zorn was transferred back to Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego. That same year he retired from the Navy and began a private surgical practice. He concentrated his practice at Mercy Hospital where he went on to serve as Chief of Surgery, Chief of Staff and President of the San Diego Surgical Society. Dr. Zorn was highly respected for his surgical skill and compassion for his patients. He retired from private practice in 1984. H.E. Sir George G. Zorn, KGCHS, as he was also known, was Lieutenant of the Western Lieutenancy for the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, a Catholic organization which supports The Holy Land. George Zorn was enormously dedicated to his family, particularly his wife, Rita, whom he cared for until her passing in 2012. He acted as the primary caregiver and loving husband for the woman that eventually would become his last patient. A man of precision, even in his hobbies, George Zorn was a skilled golfer, a meticulous gardener, and a talented painter. His portrait of Sister Mary Alexine still hangs in the boardroom at Mercy Hospital today, as well as a portrait of Msgr. Thomas Maloney in the Maloney Center at Our Lady of Grace Parish, where Dr. and Mrs, Zorn were founding members. Dr. Zorn was preceded in death by his wife, Rita and son Paul. He is survived by his children, Dr. George (Rebecca) Zorn III, David (Rosalinda) Zorn, Dan Zorn, Mary (Timothy) Meissner, as well as six grandchildren, Dr. Jeff (Anna) Zorn, Bryan (Kari) Meissner, Kevin (Siobhan) Meissner, Patrick Meissner, Michael Meissner, Marie Zorn, and six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Alison, Isabella, Finnegan, Grady and Cormac.Services for Dr. Zorn will be held April 5, 2016, 10:30 am at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Scripps Ranch. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Nazareth House or Mercy Hospital.

I am sorry to read of his passing. Dr. Zorn saved my mom's life back in 1985. Her name was Leah George. She had an aneurysm in her abdomen and Dr. Zorn operated and removed it and put a synthetic tube in its place. Mom was fine after that. He was a talented and gifted man. RIP Dr. Zorn.

You brought the man into this world who gave me a life worth living at least for a certain time.. Dr Zorn III. You were obviously a great influence on all those around you, and you personally gave life to so many. Thank you for gracing this world with your presence.

Dr. Zorn performed surgery on me in 1978, removing a cyst that I feared could be breast cancer. When I awoke from the surgery, I was calm and had no fear. In a post-op visit, I asked Dr. Zorn if he had spoken to me when I was under anesthesia, as I had heard a voice telling me everything was okay. He shared that his mentor had told him that if he spoke directly into a patient's ear while they were unconscious, the patient would hear his words.

I think this might be a very small example of Dr. Zorn's humanity. My condolences to his family.

Heartfelt condolences from your old neighbors-- we were friends on Burgener Blvd in Clairemont during the 1950's. I'll never forget George and Rita.

I have such fond memories of Dr. and Mrs. Zorn who were very dear friends of my parents Mary and Jim Sandell. I recall as a child fun times at their home with the pool in the backyard and horseback riding with their daughter Mary who was so talented she always won the local competitions.
Needless to say Dr. Zorn's reputation as a surgeon at Mercy hospital was outstanding. I am sorry to hear he is gone, but glad to think he is now back with his lovely wife in heaven.

Dr. and Mrs. Zorn were close friends of my parents, Dr. Paul and Phyllis Mannino (both now deceased). During my childhood I remember our two sizable families meeting at the Zorn home for a pool party. I also remember George and Rita visiting our home for an occasional dinner party (that did not include the children1) George had a fine singing voice, as did my mother, and the two sang songs from their youth at the piano. (Did Rita play for them? I can't remember.) Dr. Zorn rescued me from my first experience of serious pain in my early teens by performing an appendectomy on me.

My husband Hans and I extend our sincere sympathy to the Zorn family for their loss of a kind, selfless, and remarkable man.
