Gerald FARNELL Obituary

Published by Monteal Gazette from May 5 to May 9, 2015.

FARNELL, Gerald W.
Professor Emeritus
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Gerald Farnell at the Verdun General Hospital on April 30, 2015.
The son of Alice (Turner) and Jack Farnell, Jerry was born in Toronto on August 31, 1925. He was a proud and grateful Canadian who had an abiding affection for Montreal and the province of Quebec, his home for the last 65 years of his life.
After graduating from Danforth Technical High School in 1942, he served in the Canadian Army and began his studies at the University of Toronto as a member of the Army Officer Training Course. In 1950, having earned a Master of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Jerry arrived at McGill as a lecturer and PHD Graduate Student.
While at McGill he served as Professor of Engineering Physics and Electrical Engineering, including terms as Chairman of the Electrical Engineering Department (from 1967 until 1972) and Dean of the Engineering Faculty (from 1974 until 1984). In 1991, he retired from McGill as Professor Emeritus.
During his decades at McGill, Jerry gained a reputation as a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher. In collaboration with colleagues and graduate students, he registered three patents, published 93 papers and earned international recognition for his research on the propagation of Acoustical Surface Waves in anisotropic materials leading to the development of radio frequency filters, now ubiquitous in mobile phones.
As a Nuffield Fellow he spent 1960-61 at the Clarendon Laboratory in Oxford and became a Fellow of IEEE in 1970. From 1972 to '73, he was Engineering Consultant for Thomson CSF in Cagnes sur Mer and Visiting Professor in the Laboratories d'Electrooptique at the Faculté des Sciences in Nice, France. Elected president of the Ultrasonics Society, he served from 1988-1989, received the IEEE Achievement award in 1991, the Distinguished Service Award of the Society in 1997 and the Lord Rayleigh Award in 2001. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1996. Jerry was one of the first to give a course on "semiconductors and transistor electronics" at a Canadian University.
Although he was left with a bothersome knee, Jerry had fond memories of playing high school football, recreational basketball at U of T and sailing at the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club. In later years, he continued his lifelong joy of reading and revived an interest in playing duplicate bridge. Remembered as a talented "doodler" during professional meetings, in retirement he bestowed among family and friends a noteworthy number of his impressive acrylic paintings.
We extend our appreciation to members of the Internal Medicine and Nephrology departments of the Montreal General Hospital for their efforts to prolong his life and for the compassionate care and attention he received there and at the Réal Morel Nursing Home where he spent the last month of his life.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 66 years, Norma (McRae); his daughter Sandra (John Peacock); his son Douglas (Anne Tchipeff); his sister Doreen (Al Thomsen); grandsons Anthony Farnell (Samantha Guedes) and Alexander Farnell (Annie Rivard); granddaughters Erika Moisl (Remi Lacroix) and Katherine Farnell (Maxwell Insley); and great-grandson Evan Insley. His presence among us will be sorely missed but the memory of him as a cherished husband, a devoted father and grandfather, a loving brother and a loyal friend will remain in our hearts forever.
At his request, a private Funeral will be held followed by a Celebration of his Life at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

I was fortunate to be an EE student in one of Prof. Farnell's course in 1980. I will always remember him as the most outstanding course lecturer in my time. He lectured with such enthusiasm and clarity that we barely needed to take notes during the class.... he made it that easy to absorb and remember the concepts as he explained them. I was so impressed and honored to be in his class.

Dear Norma, I cannot tell you how sorry I was to earn that Jerry had passed away in April. I remember him very well. I hope that you can remember me from many years ago. My name is Barbara Gibson (Dutton) and am the daughter of Alex and Georgina Gibson, but more memorably probably, as Rolland Gibson's younger sister. Even better than that, Sandra's baby sitter back when I was a teenager. I have thought about you many times over the years and the many wonderful things you taught me with my many sewing projects. I hope you receive this entry and that we can be in touch. We are now living in the wonderful village of Merrickville, southwest of Ottawa and can be found at 613-269-2797. I sincerely hope to hear from you once again, it would be a real treat to speak with you again.
Sincerely, Barbara

Mr. Farnell sounded like a knowledgeable and wonderful man to know. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and especially Anthony & Samantha. It is so heartbreaking when you lose a loved one and all that is left is the memories we have of them. I pray for strength, love and hope for the family.

A great educator with a lot of compassion for students. I was fortunate to have been a student during his chairmanship.Sad loss, but a life full of achievements and great legacy!

Jerry Farnell wore his distinction with great modesty. He was a wonderful dean of engineering and made the faculty a welcoming place for computer science in its first decades and for me in my early academic years. Norma and Jerry extended the hospitality of their home to colleagues at all levels. I will miss Jerry's warmth and positiveness. My sincere condolences to Norma and the family. Tim Merrett

I was fortunate to have worked for Dean Farnell during the 1970s and 1980s and to have continued our friendship over the years. He was not only a great teacher he was an amazing leader for his students and his staff. He shared his knowledge, provided direction, was a great role model to his entire team and made us want to achieve our potential! He personified class and was a true dignified gentleman in the real sense of the word.

My thoughts are with Mrs. Farnell and family.

As engineering student in 1968, I took a course in Quantum Mechanics with Dr Farnell who offered me opportunity to do graduate studies at McGill. He was an intense and outstanding researcher and his work is testimony of his contribution to Physics.

I had a number of encounters with Jerry, especially when I began my academic career at McGill. I appreciated his comments and suggestions. I particularly appreciated his considerations for the School of Architecture. I felt he was one of our strong supporters.

I remember him well. As a young engineering professor he was really the first Dean I interacted with. McGill is fortunate in having people of his stature.

Sending prayers and condolences to Mrs. Norma Farnell and family. We have fond memories of departmental gatherings with you and Prof. Farnell, a colleague of our father, the late Prof. Garlam Yip, also of McGill's Electrical Engineering Dept. Our mom, Dr. Alice Chan-Yip, has also appreciated your friendship over the years.
