Gerald Jacobus Obituary

JACOBUS, Gerald L.-- long time educator in Kings County, California, died February 3, in Santa Clara, California at the age of 93. A native of Santa Cruz, Jacobus held a BA degree from San Jose State University and a Master of Arts degree in school administration from Stanford University.
He moved to Hanford in 1930 where he served as a teacher at Woodrow Wilson School, and later, for eight years as principal at Lincoln School. Subsequently, he was elected to the position of Kings County Superintendent of Schools, a position he held for 28 years. Upon retiring in 1971, he concluded forty years of Kings County education.
While in Hanford he served on the Sequoia Lake YMCA Board of Directors, the area Board of Directors for the Mentally Disabled for the San Joaquin Valley, and was President of the Retired Teachers Association. During retirement he served on various advisory boards for the State of California.
Other interests and activities included active leadership in the Boy Scouts, being a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was actively involved in community service clubs such as Kiwanis, the Masons, and the Elks Lodge. He was the county chairman of the Community Chest, the Red Cross, and the foreman of the Grand Jury for the San Joaquin Valley.
He is survived by his wife, Marian, two sons, Burton Jacobus of Hanford, James Jacobus of Santa Clara, and his daughter, Barbara Arrington, of Ada, Oklahoma. There are six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A Memorial contribution may be made to the American Heart Association, 1710 Gilbreth St., Burlingame, CA 94010.
