My condolences to the family. I will miss see Gerald as he would walk down fourth street headed to the Heritage house in downtown Smithfield to research our ancestors. I have been at the Heritage House many times as Gerald was working and we had plenty of conversations on family members and how we are all connected especially in Johnston, Sampson, Benson countries in NC. Gerald was a wealth of information. He will be miss!

We are saddened at the passing of our cousin Gerald. He always kept us informed of the passing of classmates and relatives. Our long conversations were very informative. He was indeed a historian. Through his research, he informed me that my husband was his distant cousin on his father's side. Gerald was my cousin on his mother's side. Gerald will be missed, but we can rest knowing Gerald completed his tour of duty. Rest in peace, Cuz.

I will always remember our talks at The Heritage Center. He had a wonderful, vast knowledge of Smithfield and family genealogy. He kept in touch after I left and it is a sadness to know he is gone.

He was a wonderful, giving spirit that was way undervalued.

Peace and Farewell Gerald!
My sympathies to the family

Gerald, we did not have a chance to say good bye. I Suppose that was best, because had I known that that it was our last conversation, I would have been very sad. We talked for four and a half hours You did most of the talking, but we laughed and reminisced. It was good. I will cherish that time that I spent with you. So this poem is for you. Rest is peace, my friend.
My Trumpet Is Silent
Author Unknown
My trumpet is silent
As it is with my life too
No more shall I play for you
There is nothing left to do.
Don't be sad for me today
For me please do not weep
Call upon your memories
They are yours to keep.
The band upstairs is striking up
For me they now await
To play again I now can do
As I pass through heaven's gate.
The audience is waiting
Familiar faces all around
Once again the baton strikes
And I hear that familiar sound.
It's grand to be reunited
With band members both old and new
We start to play it sounds so good
Just perfect like I expected it would.

I was a Team-mate of Gerald's at work in the early 80's. He helped train me back then and was a joy to work with and be around. He always had the funniest stories to tell and kept the team laughing. He will be missed.
