Gerard Morgan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1, 2012.
Morgan, Gerard "Jerry" H., Jr., beloved son of the late Angela and Gerard, Sr. , loving husband of Pat, caring father of Gerard, III (Jerry), and Allison passed away on January 27, 2012. Jerry was born March 14, 1959 in Jersey City, NJ. He grew up in Hazlet, NJ and graduated from Raritan High School, home of the "Rockets," in 1977. He met the love of his life, Pat from Florida, in 1982 and they married in 1984. The Morgan family moved to Cooper City in 1990. Although Jerry was a true "Jersey boy," by joining the Cooper City Optimist he became a Floridian. Through the optimist he was a coach for 20 years, coaching both of his children, and most of the boys in Cooper City and knew each and every one of their stats. He held a variety of careers, starting in the commodities field in NYC. For the past six years he was employed by Wool Plumbing Supply Co. in Sunrise and formed many lasting friendships. For 22 years he was a part time employee at "Jerry's Publix" in Davie where he knew customers by their first name and watched many of the employees grow up. Jerry is best known for stats, remembering names, making everyone he came in contact with feel special, his contagious smile, unbelievable memory and knowledge of all sports all kinds of trivia, lifting weights, a hard worker, and best of all, standing on his head. He is also survived by and will be missed by his mother-in-law, Claire Mangan; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Eileen and Brian Ager, brother-in-law Ed Mangan, and nieces Brianna and Alexa Ager. In addition he will be missed by his New Jersey family, Aunt Eileen Morgan; cousins Maggie, Jackie, JP, Billy , Moriah and their families, and of course his many friends. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 3 from 5-10 p.m. at Scarano Funeral Home, 6970 Stirling Rd, Davie. The funeral mass will be Sat., Feb 4 at 1:30 p.m. at St. David's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cooper City Optimist in memory of "Jerry Morgan" - 10500 Stirling Rd., Cooper City Fl, 33026.

Always giving you that shout out when I bike past your park!

January 25, 2024

Hey Morgan Family:
As an avid biker albeit one who does not ride on the road, my usual route takes my boy Jerry's Park coming and going. As I pass, I always say hello and imitate my fellow NJ native who would always shout out, "Jimmy Mazur. Woodbridge, NJ. Went to Duke with my man from Hazlet, wrestler Johnny DiMailo." You are foreever etched in my mind, a reminder of all the great things you did while you were on the earth...we remain especially grateful for your mentorship of our son Andrew who is on the autistic spectrum but leading a very independent and full life. I'll give you shout out later today when I ride by your park!

I think of Gerry almost every day as ride past the park named for him on my e-bike. My son worked at Publix and had a difficulty understanding social cues...Gerry took him under his wing and became his Publix mentor. As a fellow Jersyian, Gerry and I would go down memory lane about our high school days. What a special person, friend, coach and dad....of course he was...they don't name parks after just anyone.

Jerry, I first met you in 1999 during my basketball season at Cooper City High. I've always appreciated your incredible energy, attitude, and knowledge of sports. You are loved by many and will be truly missed.

Jerry,
I only found out this past weekend that you had passed and I couldn't beleive it when I heard the news. What will Cooper City do without you? You have the best laugh and smile of anyone I know and you always had a kind word for everyone. I will always remember out time together at CCO and how you would announce the games on Championship Day. You were a wealth of knowledge and I swear that you knew my stats better that I did. Much love to you, Jerry! You will be greatly missed! Summer Parr

I worked with Jerry at Publix for over 10 years and have many memories of him. This is one of my favorites. It was closing time, I was tired and grumpy and all I wanted to do was go home. The last customer of the night was an older woman and of course Jerry was talking to her and then some song started playing over the Publix music system and she said something about how she and her late husband used to dance to that song, so, of course Jerry swept her in his arms and they danced, right there in front of the registers. And as tired and grumpy as I was, Jerry again brought a smile to my heart. By dancing with that older woman for 5 minutes, he brought back many happy and cherished memories for her. He will be truly missed.

I will always remember Jerry. He was one of the most friendly, and positive people I'd met. Me and my boss Brian at Supplement Warehouse were very sad when we heard we'd not have our days uplifted by Jerry anymore.

February 7, 2012

I remember having to explain to my then girlfriend on one of our first trips to Publix together, "How could you carry on such a conversation with some guy you do not know?" To which I said "That's not just some guy...that's Jerry!" Some time after that Enery became my wife and had learned what I meant. Jerry was not just some guy...he was extraordinary! So, I could not help but smile the first time Enery had to explain to our daughters "that's Jerry!" Just as I could never help but smile each and and every time you greeted me, talked baseball or simply would thank me for shopping at your store. You were so right...it was your store...and we now and forever thank you for the memories. Our prayers go out to your family and to all those like us that sincerely miss you.

I am another transplanted "Jersey Boy" and Jerry never let me forget it especially since I went to Duke and was friends with a top wrestler from Hazlet that Jerry knew.

Talk about a guy who could make you comfortable in 5 seconds. That was Jerry. I would always thank him for taking my son, Andrew, under his wing at Jerry's Publix and teaching him the ropes: respect, hard work and all while smiling and having fun.

It is with such sadness that I have learned of your sudden passing. You will most certainly be missed and absolutely remembered for all of your hardwork for family, friends and CCO. I will think of you often...especially when a Bruce S song pops on.

Ray King

February 4, 2012

Jerry has known me since 1982 and has never once called me by my first name alone...it's always been ... "Ray King how ya doin?" "Ray King...You know who you look like?? -A young Bo Hopkins!!" And the ever lasting introduction, "Hey everyone, this is Ray King...I lived with him when I first came to Florida in 1982!!"... Truth is I think Jerry just stayed overnight when he came down to meet his future In-Laws, but to Jerry it was more than just a sleep over...it was the start of a 30 year friendship. I will miss you my friend.

"Hey Johnnay!!!!" I'll definitely miss hearing that when I walked in to "Jerry Morgan's Publix". Mrs. Morgan, Jerry and Allison I'm sure you know how proud of you Mr. Morgan always was. 90% of our conversations were about family, 10% sports. He loved you deeply. Jerry, he'll still be at all your games without a doubt.

I first met Jerry over 20 years ago when our sons were on the same tee-ball team at Cooper City Optimist. We coached with and against each other for many years at CCO. Jerry was always about the kids and making sure that every kid felt like he was a part of the team, regardless of their skill level. Later I would run into Jerry at various games around Broward County and it was always like we hadn't missed a beat. All that was needed was a little catch-up on recent events and we were back up to speed. Jerry Morgan was my friend and I am deeply sadened by his passing. He will be missed and my thoughts and prayers go out to Pat, Jerry and Allison.

February 3, 2012

Jerry will be missed by Terry and Denise customers of Publix. He always made us feel very special and so happy to see us. He is one of a kind and will always be in our hearts. So sorry to all his family and love ones. Publix will not be the same. (Terry & Denise Cooper City).

I always called Jerry the Mayor of Cooper City and the General Manager of Publix 210. There wasn't anybody that Jerry didn't know in Cooper City. I alway thought of Jerry as the Modern day WIll Rogers for he never had a bad thing to ssay about anyone. He has touched many young peoples lives in a positive way. As I told my wife, "I guess God needed a coach and called up Jerry." May god bless his soul. Drew & Lyli Connor

Jerry was a funny enthusiastic man! Every time I would see him he'd say hi Jersey girl , Cramer Hill. He knew my hometown better than I did! He always made my husband and myself feel welcomed and he was always happy to see us! Truly a genuine man. He will be missed.

February 3, 2012

I had the pleasure of working with Jerry 20yrs ago. How can anyone forget his wonderful smile, strong handshake and "do you know who you look" comment. Whenever he spoke of his family(all the time)and of Cooper City his face lit up even more. Who better then "Angel Jerry" to be the greeter at Heavens Gates. My prayers go out to the Morgan family.

Still can't believe Jerry is gone. I catch myself looking for Jerry rushing into work to punch the time clock. Jerry was a great man with a good heart. He spoke so highly of his family and would always show me the picture of him and his wife in his wallet. He always put a smile on my face. When there was a "Publix party" Jerry was always there shining and making us laugh. My thoughts and prayers are with Jerry's family.

Jerry was one of those people who was so caring and sincere. He coached my daughter in basketball 12 years ago and whenever I would see he him at the optimist coaching or Publix or around town he would ask how she was doing. He had a knack of remembering names and the reason was that he truly enjoyed life and the people around him. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to your family and I know he is looking down on all of you. We are praying that your family will find the strength to get through this difficult time. Kindest regards,

Never without a smile, a pat on the back or a kind word of true interest-that's what I will always remember most about Jerry. A devoted husband and father, a friend to all, the King of Minutiae & the Mayor of both Cooper City & the Davie Publix.

Jerry- you will be sorely missed by your family, friends, co-workers and community. You touched many a life with your compassion and humor, Jerry, and everyone that knew or met you was the better for it.

Pat- my heart goes out to you & the kids in your loss.

My heart goes out you Pat, Jerry and Allison. I know the hurt you feel. Take comfort knowing that Jerry was a "bright spot" in a lot of people's lives. He could make you smile no matter what. I always wondered how he could not only remember everyone's name but the names of everyone in that person's family!! He was truly a "GOOD" man and will be missed for a long, long time.
