ELLENTON — Gladys Bass Baker, 89, of Ellenton, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Golden Apple Living Center.Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Ellenton Baptist Church with the Revs. Lennon Howell, Andy Croft and Ken Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Cool Springs Church Cemetery in Norman Park with Josh Griffin, Jeb Griffin, Benjamin Baker, Brian Baker, Ram Baker and John McFarland serving as pallbearers. The honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Sunday School Class, teachers and superintendent of Ellenton Baptist Church.Born June 14, 1919, in Colquitt County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Bass and Lola Slocumb Bass. She was a retired school teacher of Colquitt County and a member of Ellenton Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Retired School Teachers Association.She was preceded in death by her husband, R.R. Baker; a son, Benny Baker; a brother, Calvin Bass; and sisters, Hazel Hall and Evelyn O’Neal.Survivors include son, Mickey Baker of Buckhead, Ga.; daughter, Ginger Griffin and husband Joel of Norman Park; grandchildren, Benjamin Baker and wife Shari of Ashburn, Ga., Bryan Baker and wife Melisa of Norman Park, SueAnn Barrett and husband Oliver of Ellenton, Ram Baker of Moultrie, Rachel Baker of Statesboro, Ga., Josh Griffin and wife Lynn of Norman Park, Jeb Griffin and wife Dawn of Norman Park, and Jade McFarland and husband John of Norman Park; great-grandchildren, J.R. Baker, Susan Baker, Daelyn Baker, Jake Baker, Harley Griffin, Talon Griffin and Maxx McFarland.Visitation will be today, Nov. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m.The family may be contacted at 1935 Cool Springs-Ellenton Road in Norman Park.Baker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.Please sign the online guest book at www.moultrieobserver.com.

Mrs. Baker taught me in the second grade. My fondest memories are of her sitting in her yellow rocking chair reading to our class. She was an amazing teacher and person. She is one of the reasons that I chose to become a teacher. She will be greatly missed.
