Glenn McCullough Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 30 to Apr. 1, 2008.
McCULLOUGH _ Glenn Whitehall April 3, 1927 - March 24, 2008 Glenn McCullough, loved husband of Jean McCullough, father of Cathy (Todd) Kurio and grandfather of Caralee and Rhianna, passed on March 24, 2008. Glenn was born in London, ON to Russell and Irene McCullough. The family came to Calgary when he was in high school and later moved to Edmonton so he and his brother, Douglas, could attend the University of Alberta where Glenn received his Bachelor of Science (1949) followed by a Bachelor of Education in Music and Art (1950). In 1963, after five summer sessions at Washington State University in Pulman, WA, he completed his MAT degree (Master of Arts in Teaching). Glenn's teaching career began in Coaldale, AB in 1950 where he and Douglas each taught for one year, as well as one year in Edmonton. Glenn moved to Calgary in 1952 and was married to Jean Bradley on July 18, 1953. Over the years he taught at many schools within the Calgary Board of Education, both junior high and high school, but especially enjoyed the sixteen years he spent teaching Art, and Arts and Crafts at Henry Wise Wood and Bowness High Schools. During his career, Glenn inspired many young adults to follow their dreams of becoming full-time artists. In 1969, he took a sabbatical leave from teaching so he could attend the University of Calgary where he took courses in drawing, painting, pottery, and architecture. When his classes ended in April, he spent the next seven weeks driving himself around Western Europe, visiting museums and buildings of interest. The following summer he took Jean and Cathy to Europe to share his favorite spots with them. Glenn retired from teaching in 1980 so he could pursue his interest in painting full-time. His watercolors and pottery were sold through several galleries in Calgary, and in Bragg Creek where his paintings and art cards are still for sale at the "One of a Kind" gallery. At the urging of friends, Glenn began planning and directing "McCullough's Leisurely Tours". Six tours were conducted for small groups of artists, musicians, and friends beginning with Scandinavia in 1986, and ending with Southern France and Northern Italy in 1999. Glenn and Jean spent four enjoyable summers attending Summer Session at Principia College, in Elsah, Illinois, where their daughter earned a bachelor's degree. Glenn appreciated his membership in The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, MA, as well as membership in First Church, Edmonton, and First and Third Churches in Calgary where he was an active member of both. He had a sweet and gentle disposition. He loved art, classical music, singing, gardening, history, reading, and spending time with his family. A Private Service will be held at later date. Expressions of love can be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . In living memory of Glenn McCullough, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: 403-243-8200.
