Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 1, 2016.
FISHER, Gloria Ross - Age 94, Dartmouth, N.S. Passed away peacefully at Oakwood Terrace on Saturday evening, August 20, 2016. Born in Berwick, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Luther H. and M. Elizabeth (Sarsfield) Benjamin. Well known for her love of Dartmouth, "Mrs. Fisher" as many called her, worked for 54 years. She and her husband Harold opened Fishers Stationery on Portland St. in 1959 and when Harold passed away in 1968, she continued on with their business. Known for her incredible kindness and customer service, Gloria would search high and low to make sure her customers got what they needed and remembered everyone by name! Gloria loved to play 45's with her girlfriends (They were called "The Crazy Eights") on Tuesday nights while Harold did the love of his sign painting while smiling and listening to the laughter in the other room. Gloria also loved to travel. Not only did she cross all of Cananda, she has visited places such as England, New Zealand, Australia, Italy, and much of the U.S. Gloria is survived by her son Eric, step-son Ernest (Ruth), daughter-in-law Jean Fisher and grandchildren, Sean Fisher, Darren Fisher (Anne), Dale Fisher (Darci), Jillian MacDonald (Stephen), Leigh Forrest (Lloyd), Heather Sherwood (Nathan), Scott Fisher, Brian Fisher (Bonnie), Bruce Fisher (Michelle), David Fisher (Beverley), Patricia Mombourquette (Ron). Predeceased by husband Harold Fisher, grandson Timothy Fisher, brothers Carmen and Avon Benjamin, sisters Mary, Philis, and Katherin, Benjamin and step-sons Victor and Robert. Visitation will take place from 6 – 8 pm on Tuesday, September 6, in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 7, at 7pm in Grace United Church 70 King Street. Rev. Stephen Fram officiating. A very kind lady and an ambassador for Dartmouth and the rest of the province. when we were in high school and university a pile of us would land in Gloria' basement and pay Hearts until the hours of the morning . It didn't matter that we were so many and my husband and I felt safe and welcomed anytime we went. In fact Gloria was the first stop when we left the hospital with our new baby. she insisted that we stay there for supper , I think just so she could visit with our new family member. Eric, Darren and all my thoughts are with you.

I wanted to send my thoughts to Eric and the rest of the family and friends of Mrs.Gloria Fisher. My memories, of the times that she so dearly loved, had always been met with the deep love and admiration she felt for her family. Even though she treated everyone with respect, she could never hide her pride and emotions to all she cared about. She also had the fierce protectiveness of a mama bear to all her family and dear friends.Never one to shy away from offering her kind heart whenever she thought people could use or needed the help.I will always remember the glint in her eye, waiting to see if you got the joke, her heartbreak over losing family and friends, and her deep gratitude for any deed or gift no matter how small one might have thought it to be I will always remember the laughter the most. She is a lady we will never forget nor would we want to! God Bless you all..

The death of Mrs Fisher is a great loss to our community. Her store was much so more than a stationery store. It was a place to enter and was always so graciously greeted by Mrs. Fisher. You never ever felt rushed and would always engage in wonderful conversation. If you were looking for something and Mrs Fisher didn't have it in the store, she would either get it for you and could tell you where to purchase it. My Mom was one of the "Crazy Eights" and that wonderful group of ladies sure did know how to have fun whether it was sitting around a card table, sharing a meal together and when travelling together. When they were together there was always the wonderful sounds of laughter. We were saddened to hear about her death and take this opportunity to extend our deepest sympathy to her family. May she rest in peace! Thank you for the wonderful memories. Marlene (Auby) & Forbes Keating

I bought my very first Christmas card for my wife from Mrs. Fisher in 1959 when we were just going together and every card till her shop closed. Loved all my talks with her and she will be sorely missed. My condolences to all the Fisher family.

I won't soon forget 3 meetings. One in the 198o's when Don Shea took me to Fisher's Stationary because if I was to be a true Dartmouthian I had to meet Mrs. Fisher and get my supplies there.
Second, a few short years ago, when my mother-in-law was hospitalized at the DGH and her room mate was Gloria Fisher. Before Joyce passed away Gloria and I had the opportunity to "connect the dots" as to who we were and why it mattered.
Finally, last year I took a call to drive someone to the polling station on Oct 19. As a nurse and a democrat, it has always given me great satisfaction to help the unwell to vote. On this day it gave me great pleasure to drive Mrs. Fisher to vote in what would be her last federal election. To see her family name registered as not just any member of parliament, honour enough, but the MP for Dartmouth - wow! After she proudly cast her ballot I took her past the headquarters and by Darren's home ostensibly as part of the return trip to her place on the lake. She was very pleased to have me meet her family who visited and participated that day. I was honoured to participate in a small but meaningful way in the affairs of a wonderful woman who was also a great Dartmouthian and a proud matriarch. I wish to express my sincerest condolences to all of Gloria's family.

My heart is very heavy and my mind reels with memories of "Mother Fisher" my second Mom. I remember so many days and nights spend at the Fisher house practicing with Eric and the guys in the band as Mrs Fisher watched from the dining room table smiling. The evenings she would drive us to and pick us up from our gigs and the trips to the A&W on the way home. I could never come home for a visit without spending time with my second family. "Ma, you will be missed.

For over twenty years I was a 'commercial traveler' selling Dixon pencils to stationers in every city and town in the maritimes. I met many nice people over the years, sadly many are gone now, but Mrs. Fisher was truly a special person and I will always remember her as the cheerful and kind person she was.

My sincere condolences to the family. We bought all our school supplies from Mrs. Fisher and remember her fondly. My mother was part of the Crazy Eights card club. They always had a great time playing auction 45's! In later years I heard the wonderful stories of the "girls" travelling to Flordia together! It was so nice that they had such wonderful times together and I'm sure they're up there now playing auction!! RIP Mrs. Fisher!

Sept 2/16. May you rest in peace Mrs. Fisher, I had shopped at the store many years, she was always ready to supply me with what I had asked for, one example, I was looking for a HOME SWEET HOME wall hanging for my son and family who were moving to CornerBrook, NL, she was checking downstairs for my request for a long time when she phoned to speak to her employee on the main floor, asking WHAT DID I COME DOWN HERE FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE,,,,,,We smiled and when she came upstairs I took whatever she found, paid and left happy....it has been a very fond memory of her.......God Bless her and all her family..PHYL PATTENDEN, DARTMOUTH NS.

Mrs. Fisher sold me my first hard cover book when I was 5 years old. She was always smiling and ready to help anyone. She remembered what book you bought and she would ask about it when you returned. She knew every book and every story. I was excited when I knew we were going to Fisher's. She was a lovely lady. It is indeed the 'end of an era'. She will be fondly remembered and missed by many.

Gloria was a beautiful lady. I had the privilege of knowing her from the time I first moved to Dartmouth in the early 1980's, all through the years as I moved back and forth across the harbour, right up until I left N.S. in 2009. She was the mainstay of downtown Dartmouth, through the good times and the bad times. Her smile welcomed everybody that walked through the door. I lived around the corner from her store for years, and visited her so many times, and she always enjoyed talking about my motorcycle travels throughout the USA and Canada. I've thought about her often since I left N.S., so very sad to know she's passed on, but heaven has welcomed this angel! with open arms!

Condolences and love to the family. Mrs Fisher was an extraordinary lady a Dartmouthian stalwart. From Harbour View Elementary to Dartmouth Senior High School through to university Fisher's Stationery was the store to find those things you just couldn't find anywhere. Wonderful that she lived to share the election of her grandson Darren to represent her in Canada's Parliament. She was fearlessly proud of her family and city. She was my delightful patient...Sincerely Dr. Weldon Horne Leamington On

I'm sorry to hear of Mrs. Fisher's passing. She represented what the people of Dartmouth always wanted to see when they shopped downtown. She treated everyone well and was patient with all, whether a child needed a scribbler or a couple wanted wedding invitations and albums. One of the sweetest people I ever met. I hope her family and friends feel emotional healing in a reasonable time knowing that their angel on earth is now an angel in Heaven with her loved ones who predeceased her. ?god bless her and her family.

I worked for Gloria for 13 years in my youth and developed a strong bond with her and the family. Gloria was like a second mother to me and Eric and Vic were like brothers. After I moved on in my employment, I returned many times to do her window displays, right up to the closing of the business. This is the type of loyalty she inspired in all who met her. She was a strong influence on my journey through life and I will miss her sage advice. She will always stay in my mind as she was the author of many memories. My prayers are with Eric and the extended family in this difficult time, but I know Gloria will be very happy to finally be re-united with "Daddy". Michael Laing

I met Mrs. Fisher at her shop a few times, but it wasn't until the early 90's when we took an 'adult keyboard' that's piano class together, that I got to know her and think so much of her. Shortly after that when I started working at Alderney Gate, I visited her in the store at least once a week. After my retirement in 2011 and my move out of the city in 2013 every time I was in the downtown area I made a point to go see her. I have missed our visits since the store closed and feel the community has lost a great caring, kind and interested lady. My condolences. Jocelyn Colwell (Truro, NS)

I could always rely on Mrs. Fisher to take an interest in who I was, what I was doing, and what I needed to achieve my goals. That is why I never shopped at Staples. She reminded me of my Mother, in the sense that she was always friendly and caring. If she was having a bad day, you would never know it.
