Gordon Hering Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 18, 2025.
Gordon E. Hering of Ankeny, Iowa passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025. Born on May 18, 1956 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Gordon grew up in Wauwatosa, a suburb of Milwaukee, and graduated from Wauwatosa East High School in 1974. He did his undergraduate work in molecular, cell, and developmental biology at the University of Colorado in Boulder. While on a break trip with college pals, he suffered a serious accident at age 19 that put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life--fifty years. However, Gordy was not one to let that keep him from living an active and productive life. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1989 and did his post-doc from 1990-93 in microbiology at Oxford University, where they designed a lab to accommodate him. He became a successful biochemist with many publications and professional accomplishments to his credit; he was a foodie and a gourmet cook; he was a talented photographer; he flew his own airplane; and he had a loving family and many friends who will miss him greatly.

Gordon was preceded in death by his father Robert Hering, mother Carla Hering and brother Steven Hering. He is survived by cousins Pamela Parsels of Midland and Ypsilanti MI and Cheryl Eaton Kasdorf of Ann Arbor MI.

There will be a memorial on October 25, 2025 at Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W. Capitol Dr., Brookfield, WI; visitation is at 1:30 pm and the Celebration of Life is at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Gordy's name to your local PBS or NPR station.

I had a lot of fun with Gordy back in high school at Tosa East. He was madly in love with a girl named Linda and I was dating one of her best friends Terry, so we went on many double dates together. I remember Gordy was a very good cook even back then, and he would invite us over to his house for a really delicious dinner. He did that for us several times.
Gordy was a great friend. I unfortunately have not seen him in person in probably 45 years. I helped him up and down several flights of stairs after his terrible accident back in the day.

Gordy was brave and consistently cheerful. He always took time to meet and chat with people. He was sincerely interested in their stories. A great colleague and friend at Sensient and beyond.

Gordy was a good friend from our years together at Tosa East. It was tragic what happened to him while at school in Colorado. He never let it get him down. He accomplished so much in his life. He was an inspiration to a lot of people. RIP.

My condolences on Gordy´s passing. I worked with Gordy at Sensient for many years collaborating on scale up projects. He was a joy to work with, so full of life and enthusiasm. One of my fondest memories is when he flew up to Juneau and picked me up for a ride on a Saturday morning. We had a great time- he will be missed.

Dear Gordy
I miss you! I miss when you would agree with me, when you expanded my knowledge and when you gently said I was off base. May the better place you are in cocoon you in love, including from those you have left behind. Thanks, friend. Liz

I have many good memories of Gordy from our time together at Tosa East, especially on the track team. He was courageous, and will be missed.
